Historical Description

GOATHURST is a parish, 4 ½ miles south-west from Bridgwater station on the Great Western and Somerset and Dorset railways, and is in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Andersfield, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Bridgwater, rural deanery of Bridgwater, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Edward the Martyr is an edifice of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel with north aisle, nave, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: on the north wall of the nave is a marble monument to Sir Charles Kemeys-Tynte bart. ob. 1785, who sat as knight of the shire in seven successive Parliaments; and another to the Rev. Sir John Tynte bart. some, time rector of this parish, ob. August, 1742, erected in 1743 by his brother, Sir Charles Kemeys-Tynte bart.: in the chancel aisle is a monument, dated 1633, to Sir Nicholas Halswell kt. and family, with recumbent effigies of himself and wife, and on the sides of the tomb their children kneeling: in 1900 a litany desk, credence table and altar lectern were presented by Charles T. H. Kemeys-Tynte esq. as a memorial of his father: the church has been restored since 1872 and affords sittings for 140 persons. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £320, including 62 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of C. T. H. Kemeys-Tynte esq. and held since 1871 by the Rev. Henry Brice M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. The principal charities consist of lands left by the will of Sir Charles and Lady Tynte and Mrs. Busby, now producing about £50 yearly, distributed in clothing; the interest of £100, to be given annually in bread, left in 1831 by Mr. John Jeanes; and a lying-in charity, originated by Mrs. Escott, which amply provides for all occasions, and leaves a surplus for the aged poor annually. There is also a large building near the church, erected in 1780 and affording accommodation for five or six families, left by Sir Charles Kemeys-Tynte bart. LL.D, for ever, at a merely nominal rent. Culverwell’s charity of £3 3s. yearly is for bread and clothing, and Mrs. Campbell’s, value £9, is also left to the poor of the parish. Halswell Park, the seat of Charles Theodore Halswell Kemeys-Tynte esq. is a large mansion, within a noble and well-wooded park of 230 acres; a large herd of fallow deer is maintained; in the thickets above the park is a heronry. The house contains some fine specimens of carving by Grinling Gibbons, and many valuable pictures by Van Dyck, Salvator Rosa, Sir G. Kneller, Sir P. Lely, Sir J. Reynolds, Van Ostade, Van Wyck, Breughel, Ruysdael, Morland, Pietro d Cortona, Canaletto, Panini, Gainsborough, Zurbaran, Dobson, Zoffany &c. The front part of the house was rebuilt by Sir Halswell Tynte in 1689, but the older part of the house belongs to the Tudor period. The ornamental wood, near the house, contains several ponds and some buildings in the Classic style. Robin Hoods Hut is an ornamental structure in the park, from which fine views of the Bristol Channel and surrounding country are obtainable. The old Manor House, now used as a rectory, contains a domed dining hall with heraldic mural decorations. C. T. H. Kemeys-Tynte esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is red marl and loam; subsoil, various. Crops are wheat, barley, beans’ and pasturage. The area is 1,601 acres; assessable value, £1,663; the population in 1891 was 253 in the civil and 253 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 18,100, March 25, 1885, Crossfields farm was transferred to Spaxton; by Order 18,101, March 25, 1886, a detached part of Chilton Trinity has been amalgamated with Goathurst; and under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1862, ’’ Roughmore farm has been added to Asholt.
