Historical Description

HALSE, anciently Halse Priors, is a pretty village and parish, 2 miles south-west from Bishops Lydeard station on the Watchet and Minehead branch, and 2 north-west from Milverton station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 7 west from Taunton and 6 north-east from Wellington, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Williton and Freemanors, Bishops Lydeard petty sessional division, Taunton union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is a small handsome structure, with details of Early Decorated character, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and a battlemented western tower, 50 feet in height, containing a clock, presented in 1890 by R. C. A. Prior esq. J.P. and 6 bells: the rood screen is a very fine specimen of its kind, and there is a curious east window, with six panels of stained glass, the subjects being partly sacred and partly secular: the font is probably Norman: the church was restored in 1900 at a total cost of £2,000: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653, but is very defective. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, inclusive of a farm of 55 acres at Church Stanton, Devonshire, in the gift of Sir Herbert Hay Langham bart. and held since 1899 by the Rev. Ferguson John Montgomery M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Several of the incumbents of this parish were presented by the priors of Mynchin Buckland, among whom was Thomas Hyll LL.B. Jan. 23, 1505—6. Here is a small chapel for Bible Christians, erected about 1840. There are charities of about £60 yearly value, arising from land situated in the parish, purchased with a sum of £200 given by Edward Westcombe, merchant, of London, and distributed to the poor in money and kind, besides various other charities amounting to about £50 yearly value. This manor, with the rectory, belonging in 1335 to the Knights Hospitallers, and subsequently to the priory of Mynchin Buckland, founded by them. Richard Chandler Alexander Prior M.D. who is lord of the manor and Richard Donne Hancock esq. of Blake’s House, are the principal landowners. The soil is a rich sandy loam; subsoil, marl, and produces prolific crops of wheat, beans, barley, flax, mangolds, potatoes and turnips. The area of the parish is about 1,320 acres; rateable value, £2,630; the population in 1901 was 358.

Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” a part of the ancient parish of Hillfarrance has been amalgamated with Halse for civil purposes.

Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1848 by the late Edward Prior esq. & endowed by him with £30 yearly for 100 children; average attendance, 61 children.
