Historical Description

The parish of Haseleborough is pleasantly situated in a fine enclosed fertile country.

The river Parret runs through this parish under a stone bridge of one arch, and dividing it from the parish of Crewkerne.

In this place, about the year 1146, resided Wulfric, a celebrated saint, hermit, and prophet, in a small cell, near the church of Haselborough, clad in iron raiment, and voluntarily suffering all the severities of an eremitical life. In this retirement he was visited by some of the greatest personages, and amongst them, by King Henry I. to whom he foretold his death, as he did to Stephen that he should sit upon the throne. A small aisle, or chapel, adjoining the chancel of the church, still bears the name of Walfric's Aisle, where his tomb was visited by pilgrims for many ages.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HASELBUEY PLUCKNETT is a parish and village, on the road from London to Exeter and on the river Parret, 2 ½ miles north-east from Crewkerne station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, Houndsborough, Barwick and Coker hundred, Yeovil union, Crewkerne petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Martock, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the north aisle, or chapel of St. Wulfric, is now used as a baptistery: the stained east window was given in 1872 by Mr. Joseph S. Draper; there is another in the north aisle, placed in 1873, and one on the south side of the chancel: the carved oak pulpit is a memorial to the Rev. John Hancock M.A. vicar here 1869—81, and was erected by parishioners and friends: the reading desk, also of oak, was presented by his widow and children in memory of Capt. J. N. Draper: an organ was erected in 1900 as a memorial to the Rev. George Augustus Caley M.A. vicar 1881—99: there are sittings for 554. persons, of which 308 are free. The register of baptisims dates from 1650; marriages, 1673; and burials, 1672; there are also overseers’ accounts for 1618. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £285, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1899 by the Rev. George Beilby M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. There is a chapel here for Bible Christians, rebuilt of stone in 1887, and seating 150 persons. There is one charity of £9 yearly value, left by Mrs. Mary Mumford, who died in 1830, and consisting of a field, the rent of which is expended in repairing her tomb and in providing bread for the poor, the latter being distributed by the vicar and churchwardens on St. Thomas’s day; and another charity, the bequest of the late Miss Wood, producing £8 11s. 6d. net yearly income from money invested in the Consols, by the terms of the donor’s will this charity is distributed by the vicar entirely at his discretion. Here was anciently a priory of Austin Canons, founded by W. Fitzwalter in 1150. Extensive saw mills and brick and tile works are in operation for building purposes upon: the estate of Viscount Portman, who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is stone brash and clay, and the subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and flax and pasture land. The area is 2,045 acres; rateable value, £2,925; the population in 1901 was 470.

National School (mixed & infants), built in 1858, for 150 children, at the sole expense of Viscount Portman, to whom a nominal rent is paid; average attendance, 70.
