Historical Description

HATCH BEAUCHAMP is a parish and village on the main road from Taunton to Ilminster, with a station on the Chard branch of the Great Western railway, and is 7 miles south-east from Taunton, of north-west from Ilminster, 10 north from Chard and 160 from London, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Abdick and Bulstone, Ilminster petty sessional division, Taunton union and county court district, rural deanery of Ilminster, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower 40 feet in height, with pinnacles, and containing 4 bells: in 1867 the building was restored, under the direction of the late Sir. G. G. Scott R.A.; the cost of the restoration of the tower being defrayed by the late W. H. P. Gore-Langton esq. and of the chancel by the late Rev. William Gould M.A. rector 1854—69; the ancient carved oak pews were carefully preserved and renovated: a new organ was erected in 1875: there are memorials to the family of Uttermare dating from 1747 to 1752: the church has sittings for 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1760. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, including 42 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1885 by the Rev. Charles Edward Chard B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. Hatch Court, a rectangular mansion in the Italian style, with towers at the angles and an arcade on the south side, standing in a park of 60 acres, is the property and seat of William Henry Lloyd esq. Hatch Park is the seat of Lieut.-Col. the Hon. Henry Powell Gore-Langton J.P. Mrs. Uttermare is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are Lieut.-Col. the Hon. H. P. Gore-Langton, Viscount Portman and William Henry Lloyd esq. The soil is clay and stone brash; subsoil, similar. The chief crops are wheat and beans, with grazing land. The parish contains 1,121 acres; rateable value, £2,706; the population in 1891 was 397.

By Local Goverment Board Order 16,397, March 24, 1884, a detached part of Hatch Beauchamp was amalgamated with Bickenhall, and Capland was by Order 27,649, March 25, 1885, added to Hatch Beauchamp from Broadway.

Capland Spa is a chalybeate spring.
