Historical Description

HENSTRIDGE is a village and parish on the river Stour and intersected by the high road from London to Exeter, on the Dorset border of the county, with a station on the Somerset and Dorset Junction railway, and is 7 miles south from Wincanton and 114 from London, in the Eastern division of the county. Horethorne hundred, Wincanton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Milborne Port, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas was rebuilt, with the exception of the ivy-covered tower and a portion of the north and west walls of the north aisle, in 1873 at a cost of £3,235, the material used being local forest marble, with Doulting stone dressings, a Decorated south aisle and porch being added: the church now consists of chancel with north aisle, organ chamber on the south side, serving also as a vestry, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, dating from 1615 to 1900: the old tower, which stood at one angle of the nave, was pulled down in 1900 and rebuilt of local forest marble, with Ham stone dressings; three of the bells were recast and a sixth added, at a total cost of nearly £2,000; the Perpendicular chancel aisle retains a fine canopied altar tomb, with two mutilated recumbent effigies representing William Carent Toomer and Margaret (Stourton), his wife; it is dated 1463, and is richly carved, illuminated and adorned with shields bearing the arms of Carent and Stourton; in the north-west corner is a raised tabernacle of blue has stone with sculptured canopy; the moulded chancel arch is of lofty proportions and springs from corbels of Devonshire marble and Bath stone, richly carved: the ancient Perpendicular font has been restored; two windows in the chancel are stained: there are sittings for 440 persons. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £288, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Arthur Giro Dowell M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and rural dean of Merston and Milborne Port. There are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels here, and a Wesleyan chapel at Yenston. There are charities of £7 10s. yearly value. Leather gloves are made here. Inwood is the seat of Thomas Merthyr Guest esq. B.A., D.L., J.P. and Lady Theodora Guest. Thomas Merthyr Guest esq. who is lord of the manor, John Kenelm Digby Wingfield-Digby esq. M.P. of Sherborne Castle, Dorset, Sir Edward Bradford Medlycott bart. of Ven House, Milborne Port, and Roger Marriott-Dodington esq. of Horsington House, Templecombe, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil is limestone. The land is chiefly used for dairy purposes. The area is 3,073 acres; assessable value, £6,026; the population in 1901 was 1,160.

National Schools (mixed), erected in 1872, at a cost of about £1,300, for 216 children; average attendance, 185.
