Historical Description

HIGH LITTLETON (with the hamlet of Hallatrow, at which there is a station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and whence there is a short branch to Camerton) is a small parish on the road from Bath to Wells, 10 miles south-west from the former place and 10 north-east from the latter, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Chewton, union of Clutton, petty sessional division and county court district of Temple Cloud, rural deanery of Chew, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Trinity is a building of stone in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 3 bells: in the chancel are monuments of the 15th century to the Hodges family: the nave and chancel were rebuilt in 1739, the south aisle added in 1824 and the north aisle in 1842 and in 1884—5 and 1887—8 the church was restored and partly rebuilt at a cost of £3,100, and affords 350 sittings, of which 180 are free. The register dates from 1658, but is very imperfect. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £100, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Ambrose Millett Foster M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities amount to £15 yearly, which sum is distributed in blankets to the poor of the parish. Kingwell Hall is the residence of Lieut.-Col. Barton Land John Scobell R.A., J.P.; Mount Vale House is the residence of Charles Adams Kemble esq. M.A., J.P. The principal landowners are Earl Temple, Lieut.-Col. Scobell R.A. Richard Vowell Sherring esq. Mrs. Fenton and Mrs. Mogg, of Farrington Gurney. The soil is part clayey and very rich, and is nearly all pasture land; the subsoil is clay and stone. The acreage is 1,273; rateable value, £4,232; the population in 1891 was 708.
