Historical Description

HIGHBRIDGE is an important and flourishing town on the northern side of the river Brue; it was formed into an ecclesiastical parish Aug. 28, 1860, but continued to form part of the civil parish of Burnham until 1894, when it was created a separate parish by order of the County Council, and since that date has been formed into two parishes, viz. North and South Highbridge: it has a station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, and a junction station of this line with the Somerset and Dorset railway, and is 1 ½ miles southeast from Burnham, 10 south from Weston-super-Mare, 147 from London and 12 west-north-west from Glastonbury; it is in the Wells division of the county, hundred of Bempstone, petty sessional division and union of Axbridge, county court district of Weston-super-Mare, rural deanery of Burnham, archdeaconry of Weils, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river is navigable to this place for vessels of 750 tons burthen. The facilities for communication afforded by the railway and the river have made this place prosperous, and its trade is gradually increasing. A company was formed in 1878, with a capital of £3,500, for lighting the town with gas, and in 1886 water works were erected at a cost of £7,000 and are now under the control of an Urban District Council of twelve members, formed in Jan. 1897, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). The church of St. John the Evangelist was erected in 1859, together with a parsonage, at a cost of £4,840, by Mrs. Luttrell, of Badgworth Court, who also endowed it with £3,000: it is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles and porches, and a tower, with tiled octagonal spire, containing 5 bells: the pulpit and font are of Bath stone inlaid with glass: the east and west windows are stained: the choir stalls are of carved oak: in 1883 a south aisle was added at a cost of £1,000: the church will hold 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1859. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £340, including 31 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Henry Hobart B.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The Wesleyan chapel, opened in April, 1865, and enlarged in 1888 at a cost of £400, is a building of stone, with Bath stone dressings. Here is also a Baptist chapel, erected on the site of a previous structure, and a Congregational chapel, erected in 1895. A Cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1885 at a cost of £500, and is under the control of a burial board of 6 members. The Town Hall, erected in 1885 by the Highbridge Market House Company Limited, is a spacious building capable of seating 600 persons: petty sessions are held here on the 3rd Monday in each month: for list of magistrates and places in the division see Axbridge. The timber yards and saw mills here belonging to John Bland and Co. Limited are of considerable extent. The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway Company have extensive locomotive works here, employing upwards of 250 men. Brick and tile making are carried on, the principal works being those of Mr. A. G. Pitts. There are also spacious coal yards, that of Mr. T. F. Norris having a wharf where ships of 150 to 200 tons burthen may load and unload coal, salt, cake, bricks and tiles, and a siding on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway; Mr. A. G. Pitts and Mr. Guy Hodges have also coal yards; Mr. Richard F. Channon’s coal wharf has also direct connection with the Somerset and Dorset line. The Highbridge Bacon Factory Limited has large premises at Highbridge South, standing on over 3 acres of ground, fitted with the latest machinery for the curing of bacon &c.; the piggeries attached are extensive, and large numbers of animals are fattened for curing, while the strictest sanitation is maintained. Stuckey’s Bank is an edifice of red brick faced with Ham Hill stone, erected in 1877 and extended in 1900; adjoining is a residence for the manager. This bank has a branch at Burnham. The Adult school, in Church street, is a building of brick faced with stone, erected in 1891 at a cost of about £420; William Carp, hon. sec. There is a good market house for cheese and dairy produce, the market being held on the first Monday in every month.

A weekly cheese auction is held here by F. Body and Son, every Tuesday throughout the year, to which cheese (Cheddar and Caerphilly) is consigned from this and several adjoining counties. The cattle market is held on the first and third Monday in every month, and a calf and lamb auction every Tuesday throughout the year; the markets are well attended and considered among the largest in the West of England. A Masonic lodge, No. 291, meets every month at the Railway hotel; the Royal Arch Chapter 291 and the Mark lodge No. 291 both meet quarterly at the same place. The Patriarchs Benefit Society holds quarterly meetings at the George hotel, and has 60 members. The soil is principally used for grazing, some small portions being under cultivation. The area of Highbridge North is 589 acres; rateable value, £10,358; the population in 1901 of the Urban District was 2,234.
