Historical Description
CHARTERHOUSE HINTON (or Hinton Charterhouse) is a parish and village near the road from Bath to Warminster, and bordered on the east by Wiltshire, 2 ½ miles south from Freshford station on the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, 2 miles from Midford station on the Somerset and Dorset joint line, 4 west from Bradford-on-Avon and 6 south-south-east from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, Wellow hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery of Frome, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 2 bells: the east window and one in the south aisle are stained: there are sittings for 380 persons. The register dates from the year 1547. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £75, including 14 acres, of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Norton St. Philip, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Arthur William Dorman M.A, of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There is also, a Wesleyan chapel. In the village is a malting house. Here was anciently a Carthusian priory, originally founded at Heythorp, or Hatherop, in Gloucestershire, by William Longespee, Earl of Salisbury, in 1222, and removed and refounded here by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, his widow, in 1227, and which in 1245 received a bull granting various privileges from. Pope Innocent IV.; it was dedicated to St. Mary,-St. John the Baptist and All Saints’, and at the Dissolution there were 23 monks, and revenues valued at £248. The Priory was surrendered, 31 March, 1540, by Edmund Hord, the last prior, who received a pension of £44, and four years afterwards the site was disposed of to John Bartlet, and was subsequently held by the Hungerford and Robinson families. Thomas Spenser, a learned monk, and author of a Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians, who died in 1529, was buried here; and Nicholas Hopkins, whose misguided advising and pretended “prophecies” led Edward (Stafford) 3rd Duke of Buckingham K.G. to the scaffold, was also a monk of this convent. The existing remains, entirely in the Early English style, consist chiefly of a portion of the buildings on the north side of the great court to the south of the church; these comprise the chapter house, a tall gabled structure extending eastward in three bays, the two westernmost of which have quadripartite vaulting springing from fine corbels; the interior retains a piscina, and is lighted by lancets, and at the east end is a good triplet: north of the chapter house, and between it and the church, is another gabled building of two storeys, the lower portion of which is vaulted, the vaulting being carried on octagonal piers: a fragment of the south wall, of the church is standing, with a trefoiled niche, the south doorway and one of the groining shafts: there is also another ruined building, the purpose of which is now uncertain. Hinton Abbey, an ancient manor house, is the property of Mrs. Jose and Mrs. Rye, who are joint owners; the lawns and gardens are well laid out, and plantations, surround the mansion, which is now in the occupation of J. Cuthbert Heathcote esq. Hinton House, the property of Edward Talbot Day Foxcroft esq. J.P., D.L. is a modern mansion, surrounded by well-kept lawns and flower gardens and a park of about 100 acres, finely timbered. Homewood, is the property and residence of Col. Samuel Barrett Miles. This parish, from the numerous ruins of ancient buildings and other vestiges which have been met with in turning up the soil at various times, is supposed to have been a Roman station. Mrs. Jose, Mrs, Rye and E. T. D. Foxcroft esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is fine loam; the subsoil is freestone. The chief crops are grass, wheat and barley. The area is 2,470 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £2,497; the population in 1901 was 516.
National School (mixed), erected, with master’s house, in 1846 & enlarged in 1894, for 100 children; average attendance, 82.
