Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HINTON ST. GEORGE is a parish and well-built village, on the Road between the two towns, 4 miles northwest from Crewkerne station on the London and South Western railway, and 4 south-east from Ilminster station on the Chard branch of the Great Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and county court district of Crewkerne, union of Chard, rural deanery of Crewkerne, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village has long been lighted with gas, and in 1889 a service of pipes was laid to afford a constant supply of water. The church of St. George is a building of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to John, 4th Earl Poulett K.T. d. 14th January, 1819, and his family: there is another to Lady Augustus Poulett, daughter of the 4th Earl, d. 11 Dec. 1888: and there are monuments in the church to the Pouletts dating from the early part of the 16th century: there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1632. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £127, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Earl Poulett, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Robert Radclyffe Dolling. There is a Wesleyan chapel and a chapel for the Brethren. The charities include £15 for blankets, £9 for shoes and stockings, and 30s. for bread. Hutching’s charity, amounting to 16s. weekly, is divided at the discretion of the trustees of the late Earl Poulett or their agents amongst 24 families of the parish; there are smaller charities, and also nine almshouses for poor women, nominees of Earl Poulett’s trustees. A fair is held on April 23 for Csttle. This place gives the title of Viscount to the Poulett family. The trustees of the late Earl Poulett (d. 1899) are lords of the manor and chief landowners. Hinton House, the residence of the Countess Poulett, is a noble mansion, the grand entrance hall being 120 feet in length, and the house contains a collection of valuable pictures; it is surrounded by a park of about 1,000 acres and approached by a carriage drive from the village, and from the Higher and Middle lodges. St. George’s House is the residence of Lieut.-Col. Edward Sawyer J.P. The soil is light and stony; subsoil, sandy. The crops are wheat, barley and roots, with pasture. The area is 1,500 acres; rateable value, £3,746; the population in 1891 was 649.
