Historical Description

HOLCOMBE is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles southeast from Chilcompton station, 3 ½ south from Radstock station on the Bath extension of the Somerset and Dorset railway, 6 north-east from Shepton Mallet, 7 ½ west from Frome and 12 south-west from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Kilmersdon, Shepton Mallet union, Wells county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The old church of St. Andrew, situated about one mile north of the village, is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, with a Norman doorway; it is now used only occasionally for services. The new church of St. Andrew, situated in the centre of the village, erected in 1884—5 a cost of £1,500, and consecrated July 18, 1885, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south porch, organ chamber and vestry and a small western turret containing one bell: there are sittings for 220 persons. The register dates from the year 1698. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £75, including 17 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Hylton, and held since 1891 by the Rev. John James Coleman M.A. Cantuar who is also rector of Babington. The Wesleyan chapel, originally built in 1774, but rebuilt in 1893 at cost of about £1,400, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style and seats about 430. In the village is an extensive brewery, established in 1800, and worked by the Holcombe Brewery Co. Coal abounds, and there are the remains of many old works, discontinued for want of the necessary draining machinery. A new mine was commenced at Edford Green in Jan. 1862, and is now worked by the Edford Colliery Company. The Manor House is the residence of the Rev. James Douglas Clephane Wickham B.A. also of Mayfield, Sussex, who is lord of the manor. Mrs. Knatchbull, of Babington House, Lord Hylton and Mrs. Maitland Spencer, of Oakhill, are the chief landowners. The soil is various; the subsoil, clay and limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture for dairy purposes. The acreage is 711; rateable, value, £1,948; the population in 1891 was 492 in the civil and 509 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” a detached part of Holcombe has been transferred to Kilmersdon in Frome union.
