Historical Description

The parish of Bishop’s-Huish adjoins Langport, on the north-east, and contains some excellent grassland, upon which vast numbers of cattle are reared and fattened. The tower of Huish Church is a very stately and elegant object, ornamented at the top with eight Gothic pinnacles, each surmounted with a spear – head.

HUISH EPISCOPI is a parish adjoining Langport on the high road from Crewkerne to Langport, and bounded on the south by the river Yeo, in the Eastern division of the county, Kingsbury East hundred, Langport and Somerton petty sessional division, Langport union and county court district, rural deanery of Ilchester, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower with crocketed pinnacles and containing 5 bells, dated respectively 1620, 1650, two 1822 and 1839: the tower is remarkable for its fine proportions, great beauty, elegance of design and for the excellence of its construction and ornamental work: the doorway of the south porch is a fine example of Norman work: the oak pulpit bears the date 1625 with the initials C.B., T.H.: the stained east window was presented by the late vicar in memory of his children, and there are memorial windows to Sir John Michell K.C.B. Major-General John Edward Michell R.A., C.B. and to the wife of the late Mr. James Kelway: the church was restored in 1873 at a cost of £1,450: in 1882 a brass lectern was presented by Mr. William Kelway as a memorial to his wife, and in 1884 an organ was purchased, and in 1892 placed in an organ chamber, built in that year on the north side of the chancel at the cost of the late Mr. James Kelway: there are 450 sittings: in 1896 the churchyard was enlarged by half an acre; a lych gate, the gift of Mrs. Paul, in memory of her husband, Mr. Wm. Bond Paul, of Wearne Wyche, was erected in 1897. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, with 75 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Wells, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Joseph Stubbs M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, chaplain of Langport union, and assistant diocesan inspector of schools, who is also vicar of Muchelney A church room was erected in 1896 at a cost of about £600.

Here is a Wesleyan chapel, seating 180 persons. The Langport cattle market, which was erected in 1890, is in this parish. Bonds charity, amounting to £7 2s. 4d. is distributed yearly. To this parish also belongs the Huish Bridge Land Trust Fund, the income of which is devoted to the maintenance of four scholars at the Langport Grammar School. Wagg Drove was the scene (10 July, 1645) of an encounter between a Parliamentary force, led by Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell, and the Royalist troops under General Goring, the former having made a forced march to the west after the battle of Naseby; General Goring was defeated, and the Royalist cause in the west of England suppressed. The Duke of Devonshire P.C., K.G. is lord of the manor of Wearne. Mrs. Michell, of Huish House, Vincent Stuckey esq. of Hill House, Langport, the representatives of the late James Kelway esq. and William Kelway esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil is blue and white has stone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans, and there is very excellent pasture land. The acreage is 2,095; rateable value, £4,825; the population in 1901 was 706.

This place is included in the Langport & Huish Episcopi United School Board district, formed December 12, 1874 The schools, which are in this parish, will be found described under Langport.
