Historical Description

HUNTSPILL is a widely scattered village and parish, on the high road from Bristol to Exeter, 1 ½ miles south from Highbridge station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the, Great Western railway and 6 north from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, Huntspill and Puriton hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Pawlett, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Brue, in parts, separates it from the adjoining parish of Burnham, and the Parrett flows at its western extremity. East Huntspill is now a separate ecclesiastical parish, and will be found under that head. The church of St. Peter is an edifice of limestone in the Perpendicular style of the early 15th century, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, with turrets, containing 6 bells: it was partially restored during the incumbency of the late Very Rev. William Charles Lake, rector here 1858—69, and some time dean of Durham Cathedral, but was burned down in December, 1878, and rebuilt in 1880 at a cost of £5,000: the east window is a memorial to the Rev. Noll Thomas Ellison M.A. a former rector of this parish, and his wife: he had inserted a window in the church previous to its destruction, which, being covered by insurance, was thus replaced: there are sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £330, with 160 acres of glebe, and the rectory manor (now, and for a long time to come, let on lease) and a residence, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Balliol College, Oxford (who receive from the rector £300 yearly), and held since 1694 by the Rev. Charles Reginald Blathwayt B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel is an edifice of brick, erected in 1851. Huntspill Court, situated in a finely-timbered park of 57 acres, is at present occupied by Robert Edward William Daunton esq. The rector is lord of the manor. The principal landowner is Capt. Sir Alexander Fulier-Acland-Hood bart. M.P. The soil is clay, and the subsoil is sand in some parts and clay in others. The land is chiefly rich pasturage, and is applied to the manufacture of cheese of superior quality and other dairy produce. The area is 6,179 acres of land, 36 of water, 124 of tidal water and 3,952 of foreshore; assessable value, £12,380; the population in 1891 was 2,004, which 1,345 are attached to the parish church of St. Peter.

By Local Government Board Order 18,103, March 25, 1885, Steart Island and a detached part of Stogursey parish in Williton union were added to Huntspill.

A School Board of 5 members was formed May 11th, 1875, for Highbridge South & Huntspill; P. O. H. & T. M. Reed, Bridgwater, clerks to the board.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1897, for 360 children; average attendance, 200.
