Historical Description
KELSTON is a parish and village on the upper road to Bristol, bounded on the south by the river Avon and on the west by the Coombe rivulet, with a station on the Bath extension of the Midland railway, 4 miles north-west from Bath and 8 south-east from Bristol, in the Frome division of the county, hundred of Bath Forum, Weston petty sessional division, union of Keynsham, county court district of Bath, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas is an edifice of stone in the Early English Decorated style, and was partially rebuilt in 1860, principally at the cost of the late Lieut.-Col. Inigo Jones; it consists of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, north porch and a Perpendicular western tower, with saddleback roof, containing 4 bells, all by Thomas Beilby, of Chew Stoke: there are several fine stained windows, some of which contain ancient glass: Sir John Harington kt. godson of Queen Elizabeth and a translator of Ariosto’s “Orlando Furioso,” who died 20th November, 1612; Hy. Harington M.D. a famous musician and founder of the Harmonic Society, d. 15th January, 1816, the Very Rev. Sir William Cockburn bart. Dean of York, d. 1858, and the Rev. Edward Charles Harington, canon and chancellor of Exeter Cathedral, d. July 14th, 1881, are all buried here: the church affords sittings for 130 persons. The register dates from 1538 and it is in unusually good preservation. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £186, including 46 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late J. Neeld esq. and held since 1858 by the Rev. Francis John Poynton M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Charities:-The Rev. Robert Kening in 1709 left £1 8s. 6d. yearly, for apprenticing poor boys; Archdeacon Lawson Hudleston in 1743 left £1 yearly, charged on his property in Gloucestershire, to be distributed to the poor in bread at Christmas; Mr. John Hudleston in 1835 left £5 yearly, and the Rev. Chas. Edward Harington, late chancellor and canon of Exeter Cathedral, in 1881 left £8 yearly for the poor of the parish, to be distributed at the discretion of the rector. These charities are now in the hands of the Charity Commissioners. In this parish are several ancient buildings of an interesting character, and a fountain, erected in 1858, at the expense of the late Lieut.-Col. Inigo W. Jones (d. 1878), who also restored most of the cottages. Kelston Park is the seat of Col. Inigo Richmund Jones J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner; the mansion is a picturesque residence on the slopes of the Avon. The soil is clayey and sandy; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,093 acres of land and 21 of water; assessable value, £2,101; the population in 1901 was 204.
Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1863 by the late Lieut.-Col. Inigo Jones, for 29 children; average attendance, 27; & endowed with £3 a year from the manor of Kelston.
