Historical Description

KILMINGTON parish, originally in Somerset, has been transferred to Wilts, under the provisions of Section 54 of the “Local Government Act, 1888” (51 and 52 Vict. c. 41), by “Local Government Boards Provisional Orders Confirmation (No. 3) Act, 1896” (59 and 60 Vict. c. 75), as from September 30, 1896, Order made March 23, 1896, numbered P. 1,226, and will be found in Kelly’s Directory of Wiltshire.

KILMINGTON is a pleasant parish, about 4 miles south-east from Witham Friary station on the Great Western railway, and 6 east from Bruton, in the Eastern division of the parliamentary county of Somerset, hundred of Norton Ferris, Wincanton petty sessional division, union of Mere, Frome county court district, rural deanery of Cary, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The Wiley stream has its source in this parish. This parish, originally in Somerset, has been transferred to Wilts, under the provisions of Section 54 of the “Local Government Act, 1888” (51 and 52 Vict. c. 41), by “Local Government Boards Provisional Orders Confirmation (No. 3) Act, 1896” (59 and 60 Vict. c. 75), as from September 30, 1896, Order made March 23, 1896, numbered P.1,226. The church of St. Mary is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: the chancel was rebuilt in 1864 and the church was restored in 1869 at a cost of £1,640: there are sittings for 170 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £475, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Ilchester, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Mark Warburton B. D. of Queen’s College, Oxford, and prebendary of Wells. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. There are two charities of £300 each, the interest of which is distributed in money amongst 20 deserving poor annually. The manor of Kilmington once belonged to the Crown, but in the time of Edward I. it was granted to the family of Le Port; thence it passed to the family of Hartgill, two of whom, in the reign of Queen Mary, were assassinated by Charles, 7th baron Stourton, who was hanged for this crime with a halter of silk, at Salisbury, March 16, 1557; it is now in the possession of Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare bart. Samuel Jarvis esq. and Henry Hobhouse esq. M. P. of Hadspen House, Pitcombe, are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, clay. Chief crops are oats, barley and some land in pasturage. The area is 2,754 acres; rateable value, £3,486; and the population in 1891 was 369.

National School, rebuilt, with residence for the mistress, in 1874, at a cost of £640, for 120 children; average attendance, 46.
