Historical Description

KINGSBURY EPISCOPI is a village and parish on the river Parrett, 2 ½ miles north-west from Martock station on the Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway and 4 south-south-east from Langport, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Kingsbury East, Langport petty sessional division, union and county court district of Langport, rural deanery of Crewkerne, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act,” 1882 (45 and 46 Vic. c. 58), portions of the former parish of North and South Bradon were incorporated in this parish, March 25th, 1885. The church of St. Martin is a noble edifice of stone, principally in the Early English style, but portions appear to date from the reign of Henry VII.: the building was restored during the period 1845 to 1849, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and a very fine embattled western tower 120 feet high, with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 5 bells: there are sittings for 600 persons. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 14 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Henry John Phillips, of Worcester College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1900, and seating 400 persons. There is a charity for apprenticing boys, and another of £12 yearly value which is distributed in blankets and sheets. William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Salisbury, is lord of the manor; and Viscount Portman, Roger Marriott-Dodington, of 1 Queensberry place, London S.W. Robert Rood Pittard esq. Bradford and Sons, Mrs. Gale, Mrs. England and Bradford Brothers are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and deep loam of close texture; the subsoil clay and heavy sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, and apples of first quality are cultivated, and a large quantity of cider is made here. The area is 3,711 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £8,872; the population in 1901 was 1,274.

A School Board of 5 members was formed June 4, 1874; John Louch, Langport, clerk to the board.
