Historical Description
KINGSTON (or Kingston St. Mary), near Taunton, is a parish and village, under the southern extremity of the Quantock hills, 3 miles north from Taunton station on the main line of the Great Western railway, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Taunton and Taunton Dean, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Taunton, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary, placed on a slight eminence, about 150 yards from the high road to Bridgwater, is a fine and interesting edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, with south aisle, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower, 90 feet in height, with octagonal turret, and crocketed pinnacles and containing a fine peal of 6 bells: the tower, a very fine example, is somewhat peculiar in its construction, being widest from north to south; it is of three stages and has an embattled and panelled parapet and flying pinnacles bracketed out from the pinnacles at the angles, at the level of the cap moulding: in the south chancel aisle is an altar-tomb of the Warre family of Hestercombe; the sides, of Ham Hill stone, are divided by flowing tracery into six compartments, containing shields, on which some traces of the blazonry still remain; the tomb is covered with a slab of Purbeck marble, and may be assigned to the middle of the reign of Edward III.: the two westernmost bays of the south aisle are appropriated to and kept in repair by the owner of the Tetton property, and on that account this portion of the fabric is usually called “the Tetton aisle”; the carving of the bench ends and of the front of the stalls is very fine, being very richly and deeply cut; some of the designs are extremely beautiful, and one bears the date 1522: the font is of good Perpendicular character: there are sittings for 250 persons. The parish register dates from 1677. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, including 30 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Arthur George Tomlin B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1864. There is a bequest for the endowment of a parochial school, arising from the rent of a field in Halse parish. Charities producing about £50 yearly are distributed on St. Thomas' day by the Parish Council.
On the east side of this parish, on rising ground, very richly wooded, stands Hestercombe, now the property of the Hon. E. W. B. Portman: this estate, in the time of King Edward the Confessor, was parcel of the possessions of the Abbey of Glastonbury, but was given by the Conqueror to the Bishop of Coutances; it was subsequently in the possession of the Bishops of Winchester as part of their manor of Taunton, and came into the possession of the Warre family in the reign of Henry III.; from the late Miss Warre it passed into the hands of Lord Ashburton, who sold it to the first Viscount Portman in 1872; the manor now forms part of the manor of Taunton Dean.
Tetton, the residence of Francis Henry Cheetham esq. J.P. commands a splendid prospect of the vale of Taunton Dean, the shrubberies and pleasure grounds of 25 acres contain remarkably fine specimens of coniferae, including the cryptomeria of Japan and the deodara, both of which have here attained the height of nearly 40 feet; there are also noble cedars and very fine examples of the weeping pine.
The Grange, the property and residence of Mrs. Eden, was restored by the late Sir G. Gilbert Scott R.A. and exhibits in its grounds a very fine collection of the same description of foliage, to which the soil and climate of this neighbourhood seem specially suited. Tainfield, the property and residence of Major Alfred Stephen Chapman, is pleasantly situated in undulating grounds, from which most romantic views of the surrounding district are obtained. The parish of Kingston is well-watered by ever-flowing streamlets from the Quantock hills, from one of which this name is derived. Owing to a peculiarity of the soil, the orchards of this parish produce an exceptionally fine apple, known as the “Kingston black apple,” from which cider of the finest quality is made. Irwin Edwin Bainbridge Cox esq. of Moat Mount, Mill Hill, Middlesex, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Hon. E. W. B. Portman, the Hon. Alan Percy Molyneux Herbert M.D. of 18 rue Duphot, Paris, Charles Edward Jeffries Esdaile esq. of Cothelstone House, and Major Alfred Stephen Chapman. The soil is loamy, light and stony; subsoil, clay, slaty and loose stony rock. The chief crops are the cider apple, wheat, barley, oats and some land in permanent pasture. The area is 3,208 acres; assessable value, £5,455; the population in 1901 was 854 in the civil and 943 in the ecclesiastical parish in 1891.
By Local Government Board Order 16,397, March 24, 1885, Toulton and Cushuish were taken from Kingston and annexed to Cothelstone.
Parochial School (mixed), built by the late W. E. Surtees esq. & enlarged in 1889 at a cost of £140, chiefly at the expense of F. H. Cheetham esq. for 160 children; average attendance, 160.
