Historical Description

LANGFORD BUDVILLE is a parish and village on the river Tone, and on the road from Wellington to Wiveliscombe, 2 ½ miles north-west from Wellington station on the Great Western railway, 4 south-east from Wiveliscombe and 2 south from Milverton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Milverton, Wellington petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells: the clock was presented in 1881 by the Rev. Thomas Hans. Sotheby B.A. rector 1868—88, who also gave four of the eight stained windows: a brass with Latin inscription recording his many gifts to the parish has been placed in the church: the north aisle was added in 1866: the south aisle retains a holy water stoup: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £180, including 2 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Taunton, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Charles Henry Luxton B.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. The churchyard was enlarged in 1875 at a cost of £150, and the portion added is under the management of the Parish Council. Binden, a mansion in the Mixed Tudor style, is the residence of Henry Hugo Worthington esq.; the surrounding estate of about 140 acres is partly in the adjoining parish of Milverton. Wellisford Manor, the property of Thomas Henry Ricketts Winwood esq. is at present occupied by Albert Irving Muntz esq. William Ayshford Sanford esq. of Nynehead Court, who is lord of the manor, and Thomas Henry Ricketts Winwood esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy and gravelly loam; the subsoil, chiefly new red sandstone and conglomerate. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The acreage is 1,854; rateable value, £2,535; the population in 1901 was 371.
