Historical Description

Langport, in the hundred of Pitney, is a small but very neat town, pleasantly situated on a rising ground, near the river Parret, which is navigable here, and barges are continually passing with coals and other goods. It is a very ancient town, and derives its name from the Saxon words Lang, extended, and Port, a town, from the uncommon length of its principal street. In the time of William the Conqueror, it was a royal borough, and had thirty-four resident burgesses. In the reign of Edward I. it sent representatives to parliament, but, some years after, having neglected to obey the summons, that privilege was taken away, and has not been since restored. The government of the town is vested in a portreeve and recorder, assisted by proper officers. It has a weekly market on Saturdays, and four fair days, viz., the second Monday in Lent, Old Midsummer, Michaelmas, and St. Martin’s days.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LANGPORT is a parish and small market and union town and head of a county court district, with a station on the Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway, 164 ¼ miles by rail and 130 by road from London, 5 west-south-west from Somerton and 13 east from Taunton, in the Eastern division of the county, Pitney hundred, Somerton and Langport petty sessional division, rural deanery of Ilchester, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The town was incorporated by charter of James I; the Corporation, consisting of a portreeve and eleven burgesses, a justice and two bailiffs, together with a recorder, town clerk and sergeant-at-mace, was abolished, under the provisions of the “Municipal Corporations Act, 1883” (46 and 47 Vic. cap. 18), and the property of the defunct Corporation is now administered by a body of town trustees, appointed by the Charity Commissioners. The town was anciently very large, and is said to have been moated, but few vestiges of fortification are now discernible; it consists chiefly of two streets, and stands mostly on a small ascent, having a tract of rich level champaign on the north, west and south. The main street of the town is very narrow, but the upper part, being on an eminence, commands beautiful and extensive views. The Parrett, navigable here for barges, flows through the lower part of the town, and is crossed by a stone bridge of three arches. The town was from Saxon times a royal burgh, and at the Conquest had thirty-four resident burgesses, who, under the name of the manor of Somerton, paid a rent of 15s. to the king. There were two fisheries on the river which belonged to the borough, and paid a rent of 10s. and the whole revenue of the place was rated at £79 10s. 7d. yearly, a very large sum in those days. The county police have the control of the town, which is lighted with gas supplied by a company, established in 1835, the works being at Whatley; the water supply is obtained from wells, by means of pumps placed in different parts of the town, but arrangements are now (1901) in progress by which the town will be supplied from works in the adjoining parish of Curry Rivel, the property of the Langport Rural District Council. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, standing on an eminence at the east end of the town, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, two chapels, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, restored in 1897, at a cost of between £200 and £300, to commemorate the long reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: the east window contains ancient glass, representing figures of various saints: the west window is a memorial to Walter Bagehot esq. M.A. the eminent economist, who was born here in 1826 and died in 1877: in the south chapels are memorial windows, erected by Vincent Stuckey esq. to his mother and grandfather, and two others, one to Thomas Paul, erected by W. Bond Paul esq. and another to Thomas Gillett, founder of the Grammar school: the brass eagle lectern was presented by Mr. and Mrs. Louch: a marble reredos, designed by Mr. J. D. Sedding, architect, was erected by private subscription in 1887, at a cost of £400, and sedilia were presented in the same year: the church was restored in 1887 at a cost of £2,290, and affords 530 sittings. The register dates from the year 1715. The living, formerly annexed to the vicarage of Huish Episcopi, separated April 4, 1876, is now a vicarage, net yearly value £280, with residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Wells, and held since 1896 by the Rev. David Melville Ross M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. The Sunday school attached to All Saints’ church, erected in 1891, is a building of blue has stone, and will hold 200 children. There is a Baptist chapel, built in 1852, and seating 120 persons; the Congregational chapel, erected in 1828, has 250 sittings; there is also a Spiritualist meeting place in Bow street, with 250 sittings. The cemetery, an acre and a quarter in extent, was formed in 1880, at a cost of £1,400, and has a mortuary chapel; it is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members. The Town Hall was erected about 1733, and includes a spacious market; adjoining is the Institute, established in 1901, and containing reading room and library and card, billiard and bagatelle rooms. At the east end of the town, near the church, the road is crossed by an arched structure, the upper stage of which, known as the “hanging chapel,” is of Perpendicular date; it was dedicated to “Our Lady” and formerly devoted to religious uses, and afterwards to the purposes of the Grammar school, and here John Thomas Quekett F.R.S, the distinguished histologist and microscopist, received his education, his father being then (c. 1820) headmaster; he died at Pangbourne, Berks, 20 Aug. 1861. The building is now used as a masonic hall. A considerable traffic is carried on here by means of the railway and river, and numerous boats ply between this place and Bridgwater, laden with coal, stone, salt and bricks. The cattle market was erected in 1890, on a site given by the late James Broadmead esq. at a cost of £650. The market day is Tuesday; and cattle markets are held every alternate Tuesday.

A horse fair is held September 3rd, altered to the 2nd when the former date falls on Sunday. Two persons from this parish are eligible for the almshouses at Somerton. £7 2s. 4d. from Bonds charity is distributed yearly. Hill House is the residence of Vincent Stuckey esq. D.L., J.P. Attached to the manor of Langport Eastover are two moors, called “Big Moor” and “Little Moor,” to which certain freeholders of the manor have rights of common, according to the custom of the manor, on payment of certain stocking fees fixed at an annual meeting of the commoners, the day of stocking being the first Monday after old Holy Rood Day, viz. May 15th. The two large open spaces, called “Common Moor” and “Wagg Common,” over which there were formerly rights of pasture, have been allotted and inclosed. The town trustees have the royalty of the river, and are lords of the manor. The area is 155 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £3,340; the population in 1901 was 813.
