Historical Description

LANGRIDGE is a village and parish, bounded on the north by the county of Gloucester, 4 miles north-west from Bath railway station, in the Frome division of Bath Forum hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, Eastern division of the county, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village lies in a combe or valley bounded by two spurs of high land running out from the eastern side of Lansdown, and from the point where these unite a fine view is obtained of the adjacent country. The church of St. Mary Magdalene, picturesquely situated in the valley, is a very ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, with some Roman remains, and consists of modern apsidal chancel, nave, south porch, vestry and a saddleback western tower containing one bell of pre-Reformation date, bearing the inscription “Resono Michaeli tandem,” and a set of 6 Coventry tubular bells: the dimensions of the church are somewhat singular, the length being 50 feet and the width 18 only: the south doorway is a good example of the Early Norman period, with nook shafts and bold mouldings: the porch, which is of later date, has a stoup, wrought from a block of stone belonging to some earlier structure, and still retains a fragment of shafting: the chancel arch, about seven feet in span, is a beautiful specimen of the Norman style, elliptical in shape, and above it is a carved group of the 11th or 12th century found built up into a wall, and representing the Virgin and Child: the pulpit is of wood, panelled, and is a good example of Jacobean work: the font is Early English: on the floor of the chancel is a brass inscription to Robert Wallshe esq. ob. 6th May, 1427, and the matrix of an effigy: in the north-east angle of the nave is another brass, with effigy, to Elizabeth, widow of Robert Wallshe esq .ob. 24th April, 1441; here are other memorials to Edward Walrond esq. ob. 8th Jan. 1604; Lawrence Walrond, ob. 24th March, 1679; Mary Walrond, ob. 1638, and others of this family to 1724: in the saorarium is a stone inscribed to Penelope Powe, ob. 1615, and monuments to the Gunning family: in the tower lies a recumbent female effigy, probably a member of the Walsh family: the chancel and rectory house were restored in 1872 by the late rector, under the direction of Mr. C. E. Davis F.S.A, architect, of Bath: there are sittings for 100 persons. The registration of baptisms and burials date from the year 1763; marriages, 1756. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £87, including 26 acres of glebe, Swith residence, in the gift of the Rev. Wynter Thomas Blathwayt M.A. rector of Dyrham, Wilts, and held since 1899 by the Rev. George Agmondisham Vesey M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Roman remains in this parish, and in part of the glebe portions of a Roman villa can still be seen. The Manor House, now called “Court farm, ’’ is an interesting structure erected in the 13th and enlarged in the 16th century. The Rev. W. T. Blathwayt M.A. of Dyrham Park, Chippenham, Wilts, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is various; the subsoil rocky. The chief crops are wheat and barley, but the land is principally in pasture. The area is 773 acres; rateable value, £523; the population in 1901 was 63.

Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” a detached part of Weston has been added to Langridge and Gowdy’s Farm also transferred to it from Weston, by Local Government Board Order 18,114, March 25, 1885.

Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1856, for 30 children; average attendance, 10.
