Historical Description
LIMINGTON is a parish and village on the river Yeo, 6 miles north from Yeovil station on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, and 1 east from Ilchester, in the Southern division of the county, Stone hundred, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Ilchester, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Virgin Mary is a building of stone in the Early Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower with plain parapet and containing 6 bells, the old peal of 4 being rehung, and two new ones added in 1893; the new tenor bell was presented by his sister as a memorial of the Rev. T. Brancker, a former rector: in the chapel, founded as a chantry in 1329 by Sir Richard Gyverney and dedicated to St. Leonard, is a recess containing the effigy of a cross-legged knight in camail and cyclas, and bearing a shield on which appears a bend between six escallops; this figure is supposed to represent the founder, Sir Richard Gyverney, and at the foot is a smaller effigy of a female, clad in a wimple and flowing robe; in the same chapel is an altar tomb with the recumbent effigies of a man, cross-legged and bare-headed, wearing a cyclas and mantle and girt with a broadsword, and of a lady attired in a long flowing robe; these are conjectured to represent Sir Gilbert Gyverney and Mabel his wife, the parents of Sir Richard: in the chancel are two ancient pews, the ends of which are formed by four very fine pieces of old carved wood-work: there is also other carved work, probably once part of a screen, with the arms of William Bonville, Lord Harington, who was lord of the manor in the 15th century; he married Catherine (Nevill) and was killed at Wakefield, December 31st, 1460: in the tower arch are mural tablets to the Beaton family, 1704—31, and to the families of Gould and Burnard, 1741—7: in the nave is a flat stone, incised with arms and inscription to Barbara (Pinny), wife of Stephen Tazewell, ob. 18th June, 1706; the latter was third son of James Tazewell esq. some time lord of this manor: the font, dating from the early part of the 16th century, has an octagonal basin, the sides of which are panelled and filled with quatrefoils and shields: the pedestal and base are also panelled: the five chancel windows are chiefly memorials to friends and relations of the Rev. T. Brancker, mentioned above: at the north-east end of the nave is a coffin lid bearing a fine floriated cross: a new organ was erected in 1887: the chancel was thoroughly restored in 1870, and the rest of the church in 1882 at a cost of £1,200, under the direction of Mr. T. Gordon, architect: there are sittings for 130 persons. The reigisters date from the year 1689, but were imperfectly kept for many years. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £247, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Wadham College, Oxford, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Douglas Belcher Binney M.A. of that College, who also acts as curate-in-charge of Northover. This living acquires a peculiar interest as being the first held by Cardinal Wolsey, who was instituted to it 10th October, 1500, at the age of 29, on the presentation of the Marquess of Dorset. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1871. The old manor house, rebuilt in 1672 by James Tazewell esq. was pulled down about 1834, and a new house erected by G. T. Williams; a stone from the old front with the name of James Taswell was formerly in the possession of the late Professor T. P. Taswell-Langmead B.C.L. John Kenelm Digby Wingfield-Digby esq. M.P. of Sherborne Castle, Dorset, who is lord of the manor, and the sisters of the late Captain Edward Sydenham Markland, of Handley, Dorset, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and oats, but the land is principally in pasture. The area is 1,602 acres; rateable value, £2,569; the population in 1891 was 266.
