Historical Description

The parish of Long Ashton, pleasantly situated in a richly wooded vale; a fine gravel road is cut entirely through the village, and indeed the whole parish, in many places forming a terrace, overlooking a most pleasing succession of fine meads and pastures, intermingled with wood, and having in view part of the city of Bristol, Clifton, Dundry, and the hills and scattered villages on the other side of the Avon.

The eastern point of Ashton-hill overlooks the Avon and the Hot-Wells, which lie below, at an immense depth. This point is rudely interspersed with wood and forest shrubs, springing from amidst the crags, which are in some places almost, and in others quite perpendicular, having here and there a cavern, hollowed by the hand of Nature, and exhibiting a very romantic and magnificently wild appearance. On the verge of these cliffs are two very ancient Roman encampments, known by the name of Burwalls and Stoke Leigh. The former is triangular, conforming to the shape of the cliff, and consists of three ramparts, placed on the hill-side, westward, the parts next the river being defended by the precipice. The inner rampart is 18 feet high, and is composed of a strong cemented mass of lime-stone rubbish, so hard as scarcely to be broken by any tool. Stoke Leigh stands northward from Burwalls, being divided from it by a very deep narrow dell, clothed on the north side with wood, it is of an oval form, and consists of two ramparts, the inmost of which is very thick and strong.

In many of the gardens in this parish, Roman coins have been dug up.

The chief employment of the common people in the parish of Long Ashton is gardening; and great quantities of all sorts of vegetables and fruits (particularly strawberries), are raised here for Bristol market and the Hot-Wells, which are also supplied with milk and butter from the dairies.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LONG ASHTON is a long straggling village and large parish, the head of a petty sessional division and union, and is in a richly-wooded vale, between the ridge of Dundry on the south, and 4 stretch of high tableland, composed of mountain limestone, on the north; the imposing cliffs, which confine the waters of the Avon at Clifton, overlooking it on the east; the village is about a mile from Clifton Bridge station on the Bristol and Portishead line of the Great Western railway and 3 miles west-south-west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Hartcliffe with Bedminster, Bristol county court district, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of All Saints is an ancient structure in the Perpendicular style, consisting of a chancel with north and south chapels, nave of five bays, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower, 90 feet high, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 fine bells: the nave and aisles are divided from the chancel by screen work; there are many tablets to members of the Smyth and other families, and in the north chapel is a beautiful and elaborate monument of stone to Richard Choke, appointed a Justice of the Common Pleas Sept. 5, 1461, and who died in 1486: the church was restored in 1872 at a cost of £4,000, and has 400 sittings. The register dates from 1661. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £260, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Sir J. H. Greville Smyth bart. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Lucius Henry Deering M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a Congregational chapel and a room where the Plymouth Brethren meet. The charities, amounting to over £200 yearly, have been consolidated, and are now distributed by trustees, of whom the vicar is one. The village club was built in 1879 by Sir J. H. G. Smyth bart. and there is a police station. In the parish are stone quarries and an extensive coal mine. Ashton Court, anciently the residence of the Ashton family, to whom the estate was granted by Richard II. is now the seat of Lady Greville Smyth; the mansion, the principal front of which was designed by Inigo Jones, is a large and handsome edifice, and stands in a beautifully wooded deer park. A new lodge, with gateway, was built in 1886 at a cost of £2,000, from designs by Mr. John C. Moncrieff F.R.I.B.A, of Bristol. The trustees of the late Sir J. H. Greville Smyth bart. (d, 1901) are lords of the manor and the principal landowners. The soil is sandy clay and almost all in pasture; subsoil, the new red sandstone, bounded on the north by the lime-stone and on the south by the lias formations. The area is 4,237 acres of land, 2 of water, 6 of tidal water and 16 of foreshore; rateable value, £24,209; the population in 18911 was 2,361, including 17 officers and 376 inmates in Long Ashton workhouse.
