Historical Description

LYDEARD ST. LAWRENCE is a parish and village, 1 ½ miles south-west from Crowcombe station on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 8 ½ north-west from Taunton and 5 north-east from Wiveliscombe, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Taunton Dean, Bishops Lydeard petty sessional division, Taunton union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Lawrence, erected in 1346, is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, north and south porches and a battlemented western tower, with crocketed pinacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: the chancel has a modern reredos, but retains its Decorated windows, and sedilia and a piscina of the same date: in the chancel is also a mural tablet to a former rector, dated 1628, and there is a piscina in the south wall of the nave: the chancel screen, of carved oak, is Perpendicular work, and the bench ends are of similar character, the pulpit being Jacobean: the nave windows are good Perpendicular: on the south porch is a sun-dial, with the year 1653: the interior was restored in 1860 and 1870 at a cost of £1,700, and the tower in 1880, when two of the bells were recast; and in 1896 the plaster ceiling was removed and the roof boarded: there are sittings for 350 persons. The registers date from the year 1573. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £307, including 69 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Frederick Hancock M.A. vicar of Dunster, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Frederick Llewellyn Hughes M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. There is a Congregational chapel at Lydeard, and a smaller one at Scarr. The Rev. Frederick Hancock M.A. of Dunster, who is lord of the manor, H. E. Winter esq. and Mrs. Winter, Cyprian R. Knollys esq. of Alresford, Hants, and Mrs. Fenwick-Bissett, of West Bagborough, are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The acreage is 2,676; rateable value, £3,477; the population in 1901 was 390.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Nov. 26, 1875; William Robert Pearse, Court farm, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
