Historical Description

MARK is a village and parish on the road from Highhridge to Wells, 3 miles north-east from Bason Bridge station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 4 east from Highbridge and 10 north-east from Bridgwater, in the Wells division of the county, Bempstone hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Burnham, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mark is a venerable building of stone in the Early English and Later styles, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, north porch and a western tower, with turrets, containing a clock and 6 bells: in the chancel are very fine oak carvings of the four Evangelists, formerly in Bruges Cathedral, and given to this church in 1879 by the Rev. Frederic de Sautay M.A. vicar 1868—90: the church was restored in 1875 at a cost of £1,000, and has 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1647. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £249, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Edwd. Pizey Theo. Assoc, of King’s College, London. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1869 and restored in 1893 at a cost of £150, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, and will seat 280 persons. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1866, is also of stone in the Gothic style and has 250 sittings. Charities producing £5 3s. 10d. are distributed yearly in bread. The abbots of Glastonbury had a Court house in this parish. Miss Fraser, who is lady of the manor, the Misses Counsell and Mrs. Roberts are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is lias. The land is nearly all in pasture. The area is 4,927 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £13,164; the population in 1891 was 1,039 in the civil and 1,024 in the ecclesiastical parish; in 1901 the total population was 905.

By Local Government Board Order 17,341, March 25, 1885, the following alterations were made in the area of Mark civil parish:-Frog Farm transferred from Wedmore, Mark Causeway from East Brent, part of Vole from Brent Knoll, Toot Common from Chapel Allerton, Wellfield House from Weare and two houses at the corner of Balls lane transferred to Brent Knoll, Plash Farm to Chapel Allerton and two houses in Vole road to East Brent.

The parish is divided into two districts, called East Mark and West Mark respectively.

MARK CAUSEWAY extends 2 miles west.
