Historical Description

MARSTON MAGNA is a parish and village, with a station on the Wilts and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 120 miles by road from London and 5 north-east from Yeovil, in the Southern division of the county, Horethorne hundred, Yeovil petty sessional division and county court district, Yeovil union, rural deanery of Merston, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. A brook, which rises at Corton Denham, runs through the village and works several mills. On December 28, 1894, Marston Magna was transferred from the Sherborne to the Yeovil union. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 4 bells: the font is Norman: the chapel, the date of which is uncertain, has been added, to the original building, supposed to date from about 1135—54: some of the windows retain fragments of ancient stained glass, probably of the 13th century: the church is now (1901) about to be completely restored, at an estimated cost of £1,350: there are sittings for 166 persons. The register dates from the year 1500. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £245, including 86 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Joseph William Firth B.A. of the University of London. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built 1882 to hold 100 persons. The Rev. J. Williams has left three dwellings as almshouses for aged poor, and the interest of £100 Stock for the purpose of repairs; Mrs. Frances Cox, his daughter, gave £108 16s. 11d. Stock, the interest of which is distributed to the inmaites of the almshouses, in coals, from November to March; there are also charities of £10, left by Thomas Palmer; £6, by Mrs. Palmer and £7 from an unknown donor: these are deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank, the interest being drawn once in four years and distributed in money to the poor. Here are the remains of an ancient building, called “Court Garden,” with a moat and fish ponds. The representatives of the late James Parsons esq. of Drayton, are lords of the manor; and the Warden and Fellows of Winchester College, George E. G. Andrews esq. Thomas Moore esq. and Joseph Chaffey Moore esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is rich loam and stiff clay; the subsoil is gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, grass and dairy produce. The area is 1,392 acres; rateable value, £3,463; the population in 1891 was 272.

A detached part of Queen Camel parish, known as Nether Abder, was by Local Government Board Order 16,580, amalgamated on March 25, 1885, with this parish.

National School (mixed), built in 1841, for 58 children; average attendance, 48, with an endowment, under the control of the vicar, for five boys of Marston & five of Ashington, which arrangement, as regards the latter place, is at present suspended.
