MARTOCK is a town and parish on the river Parrett, with a station on the Yeovil branch of the Bristol and Exeter railway, and is 5 miles south-west from Ilchester, 5 ½ north-west from Yeovil and 130 from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Martock, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Martock, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The town is supplied with water by the Yeovil Rural District Council, from a reservoir at Rixon Common. The church of All Saints is a very fine building of Ham stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, transept, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the handsome carved roof and the seats are of oak: there are several mural tablets: the east window is Early English: in 1883 the chancel roof, the greater part of the interior of the church and the organ were thoroughly repaired: a new pulpit was also erected and the churchyard put in order at a total cost-of £2,360: there are sittings for 1,000 persons. The parish registers date from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £280, including 63 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Archdale Palmer Wickham M.A. of New College, Oxford, rural dean of Ilchester and Martock, and surrogate. There are Congregational, Baptist and Wesleyan chapels, the latter built at a cost of £1,800 and seating 320 persons. In the market place and near the spot where formerly stood an ancient oak tree now stands a market cross; the market in early times is said to have been held round this oak, from which circumstance this village is reputed to have derived its name of Martock, i.e., Market Oak. A cattle fair is held on the 21st of August yearly, and a repository sale every alternate Tuesday. The manufacture of gloves is somewhat extensively carried on here. Goodden’s charity of £24 yearly value is distributed in bread to the scecond poor of the parish every Sunday, and Leach’s of £9 yearly value is for clothing; Leaves’s charity of £275 in Consols is distributed in coals and clothing. Walter Leach esq. is lord of the manor; Mrs. M. Moody, of Stapleton House, Augustus Wood-Acton esq. of Acton Scott Hall, Salop, William Cole Pendarves esq. of Pendarves, Cornwall, the Rev. George Bridges Lewis M.A. of Kittisford, and Whitfield Scammell esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil is clay. The crops are chiefly wheat and beans. The area is 7,207 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £13,269; the population in 1891 was 2,848 civil and 2,155 ecclesiastical.

The old Grammar School, near the church, was founded in 1661 by William Strode, of Barrington, who charged his estates with a yearly payment of £12 for its support; subsequently the manor of Martock was released from this annual payment, the lord of the manor charging certain lands with quit rents to the amount of £15 5s. 7d.; these quit rents, however, were not regularly paid, & ultimately the trustees placed the matter in the hands of the Charity Commissioners, who sold the old building in 1871; the whole of the trust then amounted to £347, & quit rents £10 15s. 2d. payable annually, & these sums are now used to promote generally the education of boys & girls in the hundred of Martock, no fresh school having been built National, Martock, built in 1846, for 240 children; average attendance, 185.

National, Bower Henton, built about 1870, for 200 children; average attendance, 130.
