Historical Description

MELLS is a parish and large village, in a valley and on a stream taking its rise in Emborrow pond on Mendip Hill, joining the Frome river near Frome, with a station 2 miles north on the Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, and is 3 ½ miles west from Frome, in the Frome division of the county, Mells liberty, Frome petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Frome, and archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, erected about the middle of the 15th century, and consisting of chancel with aisles, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, south porch with groined roof, and an embattled western tower, with crocketed pinnacles, containing a clock with chimes and a peal of 8 bells: the east window was erected in 1881, and there are several other fine stained windows: the windows of the clerestory and vestry are filled with grisaille glass of various rich patterns, made in Mells: there are modern canopied brasses with effigies to the Rev. John Bishop and his wife, 1806—23; the Rev. Thomas Paget, 1783; and the Rev, Thomas Burt and his wife, 1805—23: in 1880 the church was repaired, and reseated with oak benches, and a new organ was also placed at a cost of £330: there are sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £448, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of John Francis Fortescue Horner esq. and held since 1891 by the Rev. Edward Denison Lear B.A. of Keble College, Oxford, who is also vicar of Vobster. The parish lands of 59 acres produce £76 yearly, half of which is assigned for the repair of the church, the remainder being distributed among the poor of the parish. Lime burning is carried on. In the parish are the remains of several camps. Mells Park, the seat of the ancient family of Horner, is delightfully seated near the village: it is well-wooded, covers an area of about 300 acres, and is now the property of John Francis Fortescue Homer esq. M.A., D.L., J.P. First Commissioner of Woods and Forests. J. F. F. Horner esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is varied; the subsoil is chiefly stone brash, resting on mountain limestone or oolite, which is here seen resting immediately on the limestone, the lias, new red sandstone and coal measures being wanting, except at Vobster. The land is two-thirds pasture. The area is 3,603 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £5,394; the population in 1901 was: civil, 799; ecclesiastical, 672 in 1891.

Church (boys), erected in 1840, for 66 children; average attendance, 58.

Girls’ & Infants’, for 95 children; average attendance, 80.
