Historical Description

MERRIOTT is a parish and village on a small mill stream, tributary to the river Parrett, 2 miles north from Crewkerne station on the London and South Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and county court district of Crewkerne, union of Chard, rural deanery of Crewkerne, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village was sewered in 1882 at a cost of £1,700, the sewage being treated by a system of irrigation with outfall works in the parish. The church of All Saints, restored and enlarged in 1862, is a building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, with aisles or chapels, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch, and a western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the parapets of the aisles are embattled and have gurgoyles of an interesting character: an organ was placed in the church in 1887: a lectern of oak and brass was presented in 1883 by the Rev. Thomas Hodson: there are stained memorial windows to Charlotte Rodbard, erected in 1867 by Edward Rodbard esq.; to the Rev. Thomas Price, a former vicar (1862), and his daughter Mary (1864); one placed in 1862 to J. M. Templeman esq.: the church is approached from the roadway by an oak lych-gate, erected in 1888 in memory of the Rev. D. M. Claxton M.A. late vicar: there are sittings for 437 persons. The register dates from the year 1646. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £224, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Stanley Edward Percival M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There are Union and Wesleyan chapels, a meeting house for the Brethren, and a Church mission room in Broadway. Hooper Gough and Englands Charity of £9 12s. 4d. yearly value is distributed to the poor on St. Thomas’ Day. Price’s charity of £8 5s. annual value is for the Church Sunday schools. Mrs. Woodcock’s coal charity of £14 2s. yearly is distributed about Christmas time. The Working Men’s Institute was erected in 1884 by Major Richard Henry Hayward, for the use of the parishioners, and has a library and reading rooms. Moorlands is the residence of John Dyson esq. J.P. Miss Rodbard, Mrs. Danger and the Rev. H. C. Whitley are owners of the manor, and the trustees of the late Mrs. Woodcock and Augustus H. Hussey esq. of Stockbridge, Hants, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and sand, well adapted for gardening; subsoil, sandy. The crops are wheat, barley and garden produce. The area is 1,693 acres; rateable value, £5,775; the population in 1891 was 1,349.
