Historical Description

MIDDLEZOY is a parish and village near the river Parrett and on the high road to Bridgwater, 3 ½ miles north from Athelney station on the Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway and 6 south-east from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, Whitley hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, and archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Cross is an old building of local stone in the Decorated and Early Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north transept, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: there is a handsome oak rood screen of the Perpendicular period: the pulpit is Jacobean work, daring from 1606: and some of the other windows contain remains of ancient glass: there is also a brass recording the death of “Louis Chevalier de Misier,” slain fighting “against ye king’s enemies, commanded by ye Rebel Duke of Monmouth,” this referring to the battle of Sedgmoor, fought 6 July, 1685: a stained glass memorial window was erected in 1868, by the Hodges family, to Thomas Perratt esq. of Moorland House, who died in the same year. The register dates from the year 1756. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £249, with residence and 19 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Robert Stokes M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel was built in 1847. The Mission Hall, erected at the sole cost of W. Rawlison esq. of Taunton, is used for temperance and other meetings: it will seat about 200 persons. There are charities of £30 yearly value for fuel and clothing left by Thomas Bailey and Thomas Perratt, and also the interest of £100 left by George Lovibond esq. of Ilminster, which is usually distributed in bread on New Year’s day. The principal landowners are Herbert Edward Meade-King esq. & Walter Meade-King esq. of 12 Baring crescent, Heavitree-Exeter, Miss Lovibond, of Grove Hill House, Bridgwater, the Rev. Frederick Meade-King M.A. vicar of Stoke-Courcy, George Cyril Meade-King and Henry Herbert Meade-King esqrs. Edwin Ashford M.D. of Bath, and Henry Porter, Biddlecombe. The soil is clayey; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, beans and barley. The acreage is 2,423; rateable value, £5,157; the population in 1891 was 608 in the civil and 554 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 18,101, March 25, 1886, a detached part of Weston Zoyland was added to Middlezoy for civil purposes.

A School Board of 5 members was formed May 11, 1874. The school premises is leased to the school board, the vicar being the acting trustee; P. O. H. & T. M, Reed, Bridgwater, joint clerks to the board.

Board School (mixed) erected in 1843 as a Church school & since twice enlarged, for 132 children; average attendance, 110.

There is a Sunday school, endowed with £8 yearly, derived from land left by the late Thomas Bailey.
