Historical Description
MIDSOMER NORTON is a pleasant village and a large and populous parish in a valley on the Somer rivulet, with a station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 9 miles north-by-west from Frome, 10 south-south-west from Bath, 14 south-by-east from Bristol and 1 ½ south-west from Radstock, in the Frome division of the county, Chewton hundred, Kilmersdon petty sessional division, Clutton union, Temple Cloud county court district, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells.
The parish was formerly governed by a Local Board constituted May 29, 1868, under the “Local Government Act of 1858”; but under the Act of 1894 (56 and 57 Vict, c. 73) is now controlled by an Urban District Council of 12 members. The village is lighted with gas by a company, and supplied with water from works at Chilcompton, under the control of the Urban Council. The church of St. John the Baptist, standing on the site of the old Norman church, was rebuilt (with the exception of the tower) and enlarged in 1830, and is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of quasi-chancel, nave of five bays, aisles and a western tower with 8 pinnacles, containing a clock and a fine peal of 8 bells, three of which were given by Charles II. of whom there is a statue in a niche in the tower; one of the bells is encircled with the following epigram: “’Twas Charles the II. our gracious King, Was the chief cause we eight bells ring;” there are several mural tablets, including one to the late Major and Mrs. Savage: the church was reseated in 1878, and there are now 670 sittings, of which 560 are free. The register dates from 1697. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £260, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Edgar Newling M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1859, at a cost of about £2,800, is a building of has stone with Bath stone dressings in the Decorated style, and consists of nave and aisles, divided by freestone piers and arches, and a tower: the old chapel is now used as a school. There, is also a Primitive Methodist chapel and Salvation Army barracks. A piece of ground, over an acre in extent, was left to the clerk of the parish for ringing the curfew on winter evenings. The G Company 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Prince Albert’s Somersetshire Light Infantry regiment is quartered here and has a drill hall, a spacious building capable of holding 1,000 people and containing a large permanent stage: it is used for concerts, dramatic entertainments and public meetings. Here is also a club containing a billiard room. There are a few good shops, two breweries and two boot factories. The market hall, now belonging to the trustees of the late William B. Beauchamp, from whom it is rented on a lease by the Urban District Council, was erected in 1860 at a cost of £1,500, and is used for musical entertainments and public meetings. A fair for cattle is held here on the 25th April. A considerable trade is carried on here in boot making and mining, coal being abundant in the parish. Ann Harris's school charity, left by will Nov. 17, 1719, now (1901) produces about £110 yearly from land and house property. Five almshouses were erected here in 1895 by the family of the late William B. Beauchamp esq. as a memorial to him and to Stanley, his son. The manor of Midsomer Norton and Welton pertains to the Duchy of Cornwall, and the vicarage manor of Midsomer Norton to the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford. The court-leet of the former is held annually in November, and of the latter in May. There are many landowners, the chief of whom are the owners of the manors, the Downside (Catholic) College, William Rees-Mogg esq. of Cholwell House, Cameley, and the trustees of the late William B. Beauchamp esq. The soil is clay in the valleys, but on the high ground it is principally red sandy loam, with white has stone about a foot below. The land is chiefly in pasture. The acreage is 3,970; rateable value, £20,937, including the districts of Clandown, Downside, Clapton and Welton; the population in 1891 was 5,041, of which 3,305 belonged to the mother parish; the population of the Urban District in 1901 was 5,811.
By Local Government Board Order 15,678, March 24, 1884, Pows Ash was transferred from Paulton to Midsomer Norton and Mount Pleasant and Green Ball to Chilcompton from Midsomer Norton, under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882” (45 and 46 Vict. c. 58).
