Historical Description

Milborn Port is a borough town, in the hundred of Horethorne, ten miles south-east from Ivelchester, situated in a fertile vale, surrounded by fine hills. This place was of some note in the time of the Saxons, but lost much of its consequence after the Conquest; though it retained its privilege as a borough, and returned burgesses to several parliaments in the reign of Edward I., after which it ceased to be represented, until the 15th of Charles I., when it was restored to that franchise. The borough is governed by the owners of nine bailiwicks, who as the lords thereof, hold a court-leet, and are assisted by two deputy bailiffs, and other inferior officers. "There is also within the borough a corporate body of nine persons, consisting of two stewards, and seven assistants. In this body several parcels of land are vested, the rents and profits of which are appropriated to the second poor of the borough."—Collinson.

The town consists of four principal streets, tolerably wide, but irregularly built. In the High-Street is the Guildhall, an ancient building, having a doorcase, partly of Saxon, and partly of Norman architecture.

The Church is an ancient structure, in the form of a cross, over which is a large quadrangular tower, supported by two pointed, and two semicircular arches.

A charter was granted to this place, by Richard I. for holding a two-days’ fair annually, as a confirmation of its weekly market. A second fair is held by prescription. The fairs are June 5, and October 28.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MILBORNE PORT is a town and parish, bordering on the vale of Blackmore, bounded at three places by the county of Dorset, with a station on the main line of the London and South Western railway a mile and a half north from the town and is 3 miles east, from Sherborne, 8 south-west from Wincanton, and 115 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Horethorne hundred, Wincanton union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Milborne Port, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells: it contains the tithing of Kingsbury Regis, and the hamlet of Milborne Wick, and is watered by a rivulet rising at Bradley Head, 2 miles north-west. This was formerly a market town under the control of nine capital bailiffs, two of whom presided annually at a court-leet, and appointed two deputies or sub bailiffs. Two court-leets are still held in October at the Guildhall, one for Kingsbury Regis, the other for the Old Borough. The town returned two members to Parliament from the 26th to the 35th of Edward I. (1298—1306—7); from this date to the reign of Charles I. this privilege was allowed to lapse, but the representation was restored in the third year of that monarch (1627—8) and continued until the final disfranchisement of the borough by the “Reform Act of 1832.” The church of St. John the Evangelist is a cruciform edifice of local stone, with Hamhill stone dressings, in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel with aisle, now used as a vestry, nave of five bays, north aisle, transepts and a central embattled tower, with pinnacles, and containing 8 bells: the tower (restored in 1846) is supported by massive Norman piers and arches, but the upper stage is Perpendicular: the stair turret, the various stages of which are in turn circular, octangular and hexagonal, exhibits on the exterior remains of herring-bone work: the south doorway is also a fine example of Early Norman work, with billet moulding: the chancel retains a piscina, credence shelf and two arched recesses, and on the exterior south wall are remains of very early arcading, and a low side window: the chancel is divided from the nave by an ancient carved and traceried oak screen of Perpendicular date with a coved cornice: the stained west window, inserted by subscription, at a cost of £300, exhibits scenes from the early life of Our Saviour, and there are several others: the pulpit and chancel stalls are of oak: in the south transept within an arch is a recumbent effigy, and here also is a piscina; in the north transept are monuments to the Medlycott and other families: chained copies of Jewel’s “Apology of the Church of England” and Erasmus’s “Paraphrase of the New Testament” are preserved in the vestry: the church plate includes a chalice of Elizabethan date, a small and ancient paten, one of the 17th century, and a modern flagon: the church was restored in 1867—9, when most of the edifice, except the chancel and tower, was rebuilt, at a cost of £3,000, under the direction of Mr. Henry Hall, architect, of London, when the nave was lengthened westward about 28 feet: the church is seated with open benches for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £162, with residence and two acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir E. B. Medlycott bart. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Charles Hubert Payne Crawfurd M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. The church house adjoining the church was erected in 1897, at a cost of £600, and is used for classes and parochial purposes. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1866, at a cost of £2,732, is a building of native and Bath stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a turret: the interior was entirely re-constructed in 1901: on the north side is a Sunday school: the chapel will seat 480 people. The Congregational chapel dates from the ejectment in 1662 of the Rev. William Hopkins, then vicar here, who became its founder: the present chapel, built in 1749, was rebuilt 1844, and additions and restorations have been made at various subsequent dates: there are 450 sittings. A cemetery 1 ½ acres in extent, situated in Wheathill lane, was acquired in 1901, the cost of the land being £120; the estimated cost of laying out is £500, including a large mortuary; it is under the control of the Parish Council. The Guildhall is an ancient building of stone, with a Norman doorway; the jambs are ornamented with zigzag work: the arch, very much depressed, has large dentals standing boldly out on the inner face: there are also remains of an ancient cross. The Victoria Hall, a building of stone, erected in 1887 by the late S. Dyke esq. is let for public meetings, and will seat 400 persons. There is also a small free museum. The town has two large factories for making leather gloves and for leather dressing, which is its staple trade. Fairs are held on the 5th of June and the 28th of October. Prankard's Charity consists of £6 a year, derived from rents and fixed annual payments, and is distributed in money; Horsey's gift of £500 Consols produces about £15 a year for fuel and clothing for the poor; the Commonalty Charity amounts to about £150 yearly, derived from land and house property, and is also distributed in money. Near the railway station is an ancient camp, defended by earthworks. Yen (begun in 1698) is a handsome specimen of a Queen Anne mansion, of red brick with stone Corinthian columns, at the east end of the town; it is encompassed with lawns, and is the family residence of Sir Edward Bradford Medlycott bart. J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. Bazzleways is the residence of Hector Edmond Monro esq. J.P. The soil, which varies, is limestone, sand and clay. The area is 3,379 acres; assessable value, £6,352; the population in 1901 was 1,685.

National (mixed & infants), erected at the west end of the town in 1864, at a cost of £2,000, is a building of native stone, with forest marble plinths & Bath stone windows & dressings in the Tudor style, & on the north side is a small tower with spire containing a large clock; a fine arcade adorns the south front, and an east porch was added in 1899; the schools are entirely supported by Sir Edward Bradford Medlycott bart. J.P. & will hold 252 scholars; average attendance, 120 boys & girls & 60 infants.

British (mixed), for 120 children; average attendance, 70.
