Historical Description

Milverton, a small but very ancient market-town, eight miles west from Taunton, and five north-west from Wellington, it is beautifully situated in a fertile country, abounding in wood. The town was anciently a borough, and is now governed by a portreeve. It has a market on Friday, and a small manufactory of coarse woollen cloths.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MILVERTON is a large parish and formerly a market town, on the road from Taunton to Wiveliscombe, has a station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and is 3 ½ miles north from Wellington, 7 west from Taunton and 154 from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Milverton, Wiveliscombe petty sessional division, Wellington union and Taunton county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The town is lighted with gas by a company, established in 1861. The parish is intersected by a tributary of the river Tone. A new water supply has been obtained, for which £1,000 was subscribed by the late Miss Broadmead, of Olands: the water is obtained from a spring, on the Spring Grove estate, the gift of Mrs. Burton-Borough. The church of St. Michael, erected on the site of a more ancient structure, was restored in 1850, and is a building of red sandstone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles extending eastward beyond the nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles of much earlier date, containing a clock and 8 bells, two new bells by Taylor, of Loughborough, having been added in 1893, when also the belfry was restored and a brass erected, at a total cost of about £350, to the Rev. Thomas Hans Sotheby B.A. vicar here 1844—68, who died in 1888: the oak bench ends exhibit a profusion of excellent carving: the extension of the north aisle forms an organ chamber, and at the west end of each are galleries: the font is Norman: the chancel and other windows are stained: there are sittings for 700 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £230, with residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Taunton, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Ernest Frederick Felton M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The vicarage, an ancient structure, and formerly a country residence of Cardinal Wolsey, was restored in 1883 and transferred with the glebe to the church. Here are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels, each seating about 150 persons, and a small Bible Christian chapel at Hounds Moor. The charities consist of £300 bequeathed by Mary Lamb, increased by subsequent investments to £948 and applied by the School Board to the education of 20 poor boys and 20 poor girls; £1,500 bequeathed in 1839 by Mrs. Betty Morgan to trustees, for establishing a Sunday evening lecture, the vicar being the lecturer; Aishcombe’s charity of £40 yearly, for aged poor; Pawlett’s of £36, divided among such poor persons as have not received parish relief; and other sums amounting to about £20 yearly, for similar purposes. The Victoria Rooms, in Fore street, were erected in 1887 by public subscription at a cost of about £1,100, to commemorate Her Majesty’s jubilee, and consist of a concert hall, capable of seating 300 persons, with reading, writing and coffee rooms; the reading room is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to members, at a varied annual subscription. Spring Grove is the residence of Mrs. Burton-Borough, and Olands, of the Rev. Philip Palfrey Broadmead M.A. Bindon, the estate of Henry Hugo Worthington esq. is partly within this parish, but the house is in the adjoining parish of Langford Budville. About 1847 an urn containing a quantity of Roman coins was discovered here, these belonged to the reigns of Faustina, A.D. 125—175: Julian, 360—3; Valentinian I. Valens and Valentinian II. 364—97; Theodosius Maximus, 370—95; and Arcadius, 395—408. The King is lord of the manor. A court leet is held here once a year in October. The principal landowners are William Ayshford Sanford esq. of Nynehead Court, William Bucknell Broadmead esq. of Enmore Park, and Mrs. Burton-Borough. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil various, being a mixture of clay, sand and lime rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,869 acres; rateable value, £11,111; the population in 1901 was 1,427.

On March 24, 1884, by Local Government Board Order 16,603, a portion of the parish of Hillfarrance was for civil purposes amalgamated with this parish, and part of Milverton transferred to Ashbrittle, by Order 16,381, for civil purposes.

A School Board of 5 members was formed June 23, 1871; Charles Kick, clerk to the board.

Board Schools, erected, with master’s house, about 1835 & greatly enlarged in 1872, for 150 boys, 70 girls & 70 infants; average attendance, 70 boys, 77 girls & 64 infants.
