A tributary of the Parrett here divides the counties of Dorset and Somerset for a short distance. The church of St. Leonard is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: there are sittings for 300 persons, 213 of which are free. The register dates from 1558, Crewkerne being the mother church. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £198, including 62 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Winchester, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Cecil John Hay Locke. Here is a Baptist and also a Wesleyan mission chapel.

Owsley’s charity of £32 2s. yearly, derived from land, is for the poor of the parish and is distributed by the trustees in money at intervals of six months. The trustees of the late Earl Poulett (d, 1899), who are lords of the manor, Viscount Portman, and Henry William Hoskyns esq. of North Perrott, are chief landowners. The soil is stony; subsoil, the same; and the farms chiefly consist of pasture lands. The area is 1,336 acres; rateable value, £4,443; the population in 1891 was 679.

National School (mixed), erected in 1874, enlarged 1895, to hold 160 children; average attendance, 130.
