Historical Description

MONKTON COMBE (Combe Monckton) is a parish and village, bounded on the south and east by the county of Wilts, 1 mile west from Limpley Stoke station on the Wilts and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and 3 ½ south-east from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, eastern division of the hundred of Bath Forum, Weston petty sessional division, county court district and union of Bath, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, north porch and a western saddleback tower, containing a clock and 2 bells: the north aisle was added in 1881: the church has been entirely rebuilt at a cost of £1,533, and affords sittings for 290 persons. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1561; marriages, 1590. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £74, and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1883 by the Rev. David Lee Pitcairn M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. The Mount Pleasant Church Mission chapel will seat 40 persons. There is also a Congregational chapel. In the parish are some remains of a Roman settlement. On Combe Down are the largest stone quarries in the neighbourhood, and the stone obtained under the name of “Bath stone” is largely used. William Vaughan-Jenkins esq. of Combe Grange, is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Right Rev. Mgr. Charles Parfitt D.D. are chief landowners. The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 675 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £6,666; the population in 1891 was 1,760.
