Historical Description

The village of Montacute, where the Earl of Moreton and Cornwall, brother, by the mother’s side, to William the Conqueror, built a castle on the top of a hill, and a Priory of Cluniack Monks at the bottom. This castle has been many years totally destroyed, but there are some remains of the priory, which are kept in repair, and make an agreeable country-seat.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MONTACUTE is a parish and village, with a station on the Durston and Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway, 128 miles from London and 4 west from Yeovil, in the Southern division of the county, Tintinhull hundred, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Martock, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. Since April, 1899, the village has been lighted with gas supplied by the Martock Gas Company Limited. The church of St. Catharine is a building of stone in the Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells, rehung in 1901 at a cost of £160: there are five stained windows: a fine Norman arch divides the chancel from the nave: in the north transept is a tomb with recumbent effigies in stone of David Phelips and Ann his wife, 1484; and there are other memorials to Miss Bridget Phelips, 1508; Thomas Phelips, 1588, and Elizabeth Phelips, his wife, 1598, surmounted by a canopy; Sir Edward Phelipps kt. King’s Sergeant, Speaker of the House of Commons and Master of the Rolls, ob. 11th Sept. 1619, and Dame Edith Phelipps, 1728: the church was thoroughly restored in 1871, and has sittings for 380 persons. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, including 5 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of W. R. Phelips esq. and held since 1885 by the Rev. Charles Francis Powys M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1880, is a building in the Early Gothic style, and has a stained window, presented by the Baptist church at Upper Norwood: under the platform is a marble baptistery, presented by Mr. G. Mitchell, of Brompton road, London, a native of Montacute: there are sittings for 300 persons. The Constitutional Hall, opened at Christmas, 1892, is a building of Ham stone, erected through the munificence of W. R. Phelips esq.; it will hold 250 people, and there are also billiard and reading rooms, the latter being liberally supplied with periodicals and books of reference. On Hamdon Hill are some very extensive quarries of freestone, a great quantity of which is used in building and for decorative purposes. The neighbourhood abounds with objects of interest: on the summit of Hamdon Hill are remains of British earthworks, subsequently utilised by the Romans as an encampment: these comprise a double vallum, nearly 3 miles in circumference, with a rampart of stone inclosing on the north-west about 20 acres; on this spot a great number of coins, weapons and other antiquities have been found. Montacute House, the seat of William Robert Phelips esq. D.L., J.P. is a handsome and extensive building in the Elizabethan style, erected between the years 1580 and 1601: the principal front is 189 feet in length and 62 feet in height, and is adorned with nine stone statues, representing Moses, Joshua and Judas Maccabeus; Caesar, Pompey and Alexander the Great and King Arthur, the Emperor Charlemagne and Godfrey de Bouillon; the gardens are also interesting, and the views obtained from the mansion are of the most varied and picturesque character. A portion of the park was opened in 1897 as a cricket ground. Here was once a Cluniac priory, founded in the reign of Henry I. by William Earl of Moreton, and dedicated to SS. Peter and Paul; the revenues were estimated at £456 yearly; the lodge and gateway, both of Perpendicular date, and in a good state of preservation, have been converted into a farmhouse. William Robert Phelips esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loam and sand; the subsoil is clay. The crops are wheat and barley, and considerable land in pasture. The area is 1,417 acres; rateable value, £3,432; the population in 1901 was 758.

National School (mixed), built in 1,847 & enlarged in 1896, for 190 children; average attendance, 110.
