Historical Description

MOORLINCH is a parish and village 4 miles south from Shapwick station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 7 south-by-west from Glastonbury and 7 east from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Whitley, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Bridgwater, rural deanery of Glastonbury and archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, partly in the Early English style, with Perpendicular additions, and consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and massive embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: there are sittings for 190 persons. The register dates from the year 1578, but the entries prior to 1652 relate to Edington only. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelries of Stawell and Sutton Mallet annexed, joint net yearly value £310, including 95 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1884 by the Rev. Frederick Northcote Smith M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford: the Hon. H. B. Templer Strangways, of Shapwick, is lay rector; value of rectorial tithes, £90 yearly. Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1840 and rebuilt in 1894. Christopher W. M. Greenhill esq. of Puriton, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Charles Atkins esq. Mrs. Moore and the vicar. The greater part of the land is of a clayey and heavy character. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and turnips. The area of the civil parish is 1,125 acres; rateable value, £1,849; the population in 1901 was 261.
