Historical Description

NAILSEA is a large parish and village, with a station 1 mile south-east on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, 9 west-south-west from Bristol and 4 ½ east-south-east from Clevedon, in the Northern division of the county, Bedminster union, Bristol county court district, Portbury hundred, Long Ashton petty sessional division, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Trinity is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells: there is a singular stone pulpit and a good oaken chest: the church was restored in 1861, and has 320 sittings. The register dates from the year 1545. The living was separated from that of Wraxall and made a distinct rectory, under the provisions of an Act of Parliament, 51 George III. (1811), net yearly value £183, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1874 by the Rev. John Johnson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The population in 1901 of Holy Trinity parish was 998. Christ Church is an ecclesiastical parish, formed April 12, 1844, from that of Nailsea: the church, erected in 1843, is of stone, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an open western belfry, containing one bell: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from 1844. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £120, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Nailsea, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Frederick Augustus Veysey B.A., LL.B. Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan, Congregational and Free Methodist chapels here. A cemetery of one rood was opened in 1893 at a cost of £92 by voluntary subscriptions. The charities amount to £4 7s. There are several coal pits, which have not been worked for some years, stone quarries, a steam corn mill and two small breweries. The Manor House is partly temp. Henry VIII. but chiefly Elizabethan, and some of the rooms retain good panelling. The trustees of the late Sir John Henry Greville Smyth bart. of-Ashton Court (d. 1901), who are lords of the manor, the trustees of the late John Rodbard Rodbard esq. Henry L. Bean esq. Henry John Mirehouse esq. of St. George’s Hill, Easton-in-Gordano, and Mrs. Gee are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy; the subsoil, red sandstone. There is a large tract of moorland, which was inclosed, under an Act of Parliament, in the year 1813. The acreage of the entire civil parish is 2,858, chiefly pasture; rateable value, £9,358; the population in 1901 was 1,716, of which 718 were in the ecclesiastical parish of Christ Church.

By Local Government Board Order 16,500, March 24, 1884, New Mead was transferred from Wraxall and Ley from Kenn to Nailsea.
