Historical Description

NETHER STOWEY, formerly a market town, is a parish and pretty village, on a small stream which flows into the river Parrett, 8 miles west from Bridgwater station on the Great Western railway, at which place there is also a station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, and about 6 miles north-east from Crowcombe station on the Taunton and Minehead branch of the Great Western railway; the parish is in the Western division of the county, western division of Williton and Freemanors hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, Bridgwater union and county court district, rural deanery of Quantoxhead, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: seven of the windows are stained, and include a memorial window to the twin brothers Sealey, given by E. U. Vidal esq. of Cornborough: the church was rebuilt, excepting the tower, in 1850, and has sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 47 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Robert Harland. Here is a Congregational chapel. The charities, which are derived from land, amount to about £20 yearly. Here are stone quarries. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the distinguished poet, resided here from 1797 till 1800, as appears from an inscribed stone slab in the wall of the house where he lived, and in which some of his most effective lines were written. Court House, the residence of Mrs. Poyntz, incorporates portions of a monastery, once existing on this site; the ruins of the cloisters are extant, and the remains of a moat may still be traced. In this parish is Castle hill, near which are the ruins of a fortress, once the residence of James (Touchet), 14th Baron Audley, who was one of the leaders of the Cornish insurrection in 1497; in the encounter that took place at Blackheath, June 24, 1497, between the kings forces and the insurgents, Lord Audley was taken prisoner and shortly afterwards executed on Tower hill. On the Quantocks, near Nether Stowey, the red deer are hunted in the spring and autumn by the famous Devon and Somerset staghounds, and the West Somerset and Taunton Vale foxhounds meet in the district frequently during the season. Sir John Heathcoat Amory's stag-hounds also meet here twice yearly. Master, Ian Heathcoat-Amory esq. A part of the population, known in this locality as “broom squires,” is employed in the manufacture of heath brooms, from the heather gathered on the neighbouring hills. The Hon. Mrs. Stanley and Edward James Stanley esq. M.P. of Quantock Lodge, Over Stowey, and Capt. Sir Alexander Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. M.P. who is lord of the manor, are chief landowners. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, green crops and roots. The area is 1,069 acres; rateable value, £2,983; the population in 1901 was 556 civil, 573 ecclesiastical.

By Local Government Board Order 10,612, June 3, 1880, detached parts of Nether Stowey were added to Spaxton; and by Order 18,101, March 25, 1886, Stowey Rocks was transferred from Over Stowey to Nether Stowey for civil purposes.

National School (mixed), erected in 1813, for 140 children; average attendance, 95.
