Historical Description

North Curry, a small market- town, pleasantly situated on the River Tone, east of Taunton; but containing nothing interesting to the traveller. The market is on Tuesday.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

NORTH CURRY is a large parish on the river Tone and on the main road from Taunton to Langport, 2 miles south-east from Jurston Junction station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the main line of the Great Western railway, about 7 east from Taunton and 9 south-southeast from Bridgwater. The parish is divided into four tithings, viz. Curry, Lillesdon, Wrantage and Knapp, and is in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of North Curry, Taunton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient cruciform edifice of stone chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, a fine south porch and a central octagonal tower containing a clock and 8 bells: the south transept belongs to the Decorated period, and in the north aisle is a doorway of Norman date; in the north aisle is an altar tomb with recumbent effigy, but without inscription or date: in 1893 a stained window was placed by Major Barrett in memory of his son Macdonald, who was drowned whilst fishing in Scotland: the nave was restored in 1881—4 by the parishioners and the chancel by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the whole cost, including an organ and several stained windows, being £8,000: there are sittings for 530 persons. The parish register is in good preservation, and dates from 1539. The living, formerly held with Stoke St. Gregory and West Hatch, is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Daniel James Pring M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford: the rectorial tithes of this parish, amounting to £650, belong to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lay rectors of North Curry, lay vicars and lay rectors of Stoke St. Gregory. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. The charities, amounting to £40 18s. 1d. yearly, are as follows: Mrs. Goulds bread charity, £5 18s. 4d.; Reeve’s feast charity, £21 14s. 9d.; Mrs. Robb’s charity, £7 1s.; Miss Crease’s charity, £5; unknown donor’s charity, £1 4s. There is an assembly-room for concerts and public meetings, holding 250 persons. King John granted a market to this place, and it continued to be held twice a week until 1841, when it was discontinued. A fair for cattle is held here annually on the first Tuesday in September. A curious custom was formerly observed here, called the “Reeve’s Feast, " which, by a charter of King John, was provided by the Reeve, and certain other tenants of the manor, some finding money and some wheat, in proportion to the value of the tenements held by them, on the day before Christmas, at which certain other tenants, called ‘‘The Jack of Slough,” and “The Jack of Knapp,” were masters of the ceremonies, and had to distribute portions of three bullocks and some loaves of bread, provided by the Reeve for the time being, among the tenants of the manor, in quantities according to their holdings, and after certain portions has been reserved for the feast, the remainder was distributed to the second poor of the parish. On the day after Christmas Day a feast was held, when an effigy of King John was placed on the table, serving as an ornament to an immense mince-pie; according to the charter, a toast was drunk to the “mortal memory of King John,” and liberty given to continue drinking until two candles, each of 1lb. weight, were burnt out: in order that this custom might not fall into disuse, a tablet, giving an account of the ceremonies of this feast, was many years ago placed in the vestry, but the custom was abolished about 1860, and the sum provided is now vested in the Charity Commissioners, and distributed by the vicar and churchwardens, the parishes of West Hatch and Stoke St. Gregory also participating in the charity. Newport, in the tithing of Wrantage, formerly had the privilege of a corporate town. An urn, containing Roman silver coins of the Lower Empire, was found here in the year 1748. Major W. Barrett D.L., J.P. the trustees of the late C. W. Dare esq. the Hon. Henry Powell Gore-Langton, of Hatch Beauchamp, and C. R. Morris esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is rich marl; subsoil, marl. The land is chiefly pasture, and some wheat, barley, beans and roots are grown. The area is 5,819 acres of land, 4 of water, 11 of tidal water and 14 of foreshore; assessable value, £8,827; in 1891 the population was 1,604.

National, North Curry (mixed), erected in 1847 & enlarged in 1870, for 180 children; average attendance, 140.

Parochial, Wrantage (mixed), erected in 1880 & enlarged in 1896, for 80 children; average attendance 72.
