Historical Description

NORTH WOOTTON is a parish and village standing by a stream at the entrance of a valley, surrounded by curiously formed hills, 2 miles north from West Pennard station on the London and South Western and Midland railway companies, Somerset and Dorset joint line, 3 ½ south-east from Wells, and 4 ½ south-west from Shepton Mallet, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Glaston Twelve Hides, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wells, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with four pinnacles, and containing 3 bells, one of which is apparently of the 12th century: the west window is stained: the font is Norman: the church was restored in 1869, and has sittings for 103 persons: in the churchyard is a fine old yew tree. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1563; marriages, 1565; burials, 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £295, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Pilton, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Henry Augustus Smith Pitt, of Durham University. There is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1830, and seating 60 persons. Mr. Pittard left by will £103, and Mr, John Coombs £100, now invested in Consols; the interest, amounting to £5 10s. yearly, is distributed among the poor. Earl Temple, who is lord of the manor, T. Pierce and John Coombs esqrs. and Messrs. James and Richard Porch are chief landowners. The soil is red marl, and in some parts a strong clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. Cheese and cider are produced The acreage is 2,129; rateable value, £2,014; the population in 1891 was 271, civil; 295, ecclesiastical.

By Local Government Board Order 15,666, March 24, 1884, a detached part of Pilton, known as Queen’s Sedgmoor, was transferred to North Wootton.

National School (mixed), enlarged in 1894 for 80 children; average attendance, 52.
