The church of All Saints, standing on a rising ground, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, dating from the latter part of the 14th century, and consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, chapel, vestry, south porch and a fine embattled western tower of the date of Richard II. containing 6 bells: a very curious and richly-carved oak screen, dating from about 1500, with figures of two dragons, and a plough drawn by three oxen, and the name of Ralphe Harris, churchwarden, separates the chancel and chapel from the nave and aisle: on the south side of the nave is a monument to James Prowse esq. 1672: the stained west window was presented by the rector and his brother, in memory of their parents: in the chancel is a memorial window to W. Hewett esq. of Norton Court: the whole of this church has been rebuilt: the chancel, which contains traces of an earlier church of the 13th century, having been completed in 1866: there are sittings for 250 persons. The southwest comer of the churchyard has for a long time been used as a burial place for gipsies. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1556; marriages, 1565; burials, 1566. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, inclading 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1892 by the Rev. Marshall esq. at a cost of over £1,000, is substantially built of brick with Ham stone dressings, and contains a large hall for meetings, entertainments &c. smoking and reading rooms; in 1897 a large bowling alley was added. Norton Camp, standing on a hill near the church, and half a mile from the village, on the estate of W. G. Marshall esq. is an ancient circular earthwork, about 13 acres in extent, with three covert ways leading from the interior at different points and a path crossing it from south to north-east; this spot is also affirmed to have been the site of a Romano-British town, called “Theodunum”; in the valley below the hill a large-quantity of Roman pottery was met with during the excavations for the railway. Montys Court, the property of Wyndham Slade esq. J.P. is pleasantly seated a mile and a quarter south-west from the village church. Norton Manor, the residence of Wilfred George Marshall esq. J.P. and master of the West Somerset Foxhounds, is about a mile and a half north-west, on a gentle eminence commanding a beautiful and picturesque view of the surrounding neighbourhood.
