Historical Description
Phillip's Norton, in the hundred of Wellow, a small market-town, at the eastern extremity of the county. It consuls of one long street, which is irregular and ill- paved. The Church is a small Gothic structure, and appears to be very ancient; but the principal circumstance that renders this place remarkable, is its annual fair, held on the first of May, at which not only woollen cloth, but also such large quantities of other goods are sold, that it is said to equal, if not exceed, any other fair in the kingdom. The weekly market is on Thursday.
NORTON ST. PHILIP is a parish and village midway on the high road from Bath to Frome, 3 miles south-south-east from Midford station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 7 south from Bath and 6 south-west from Trowbridge, in the Frome division of the county, Wellow hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Frome union and county court district, rural deanery of Frome, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of S. Philip and All Saints is an ancient edifice of stone in the Later English style, consisting of lofty chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, re-hung in 1889: high carved open screens of oak inclose the north aisle and vestry: the tower and a choir screen were erected in 1886 at a cost of £1,000: there is a richly-carved reredos: the east window and others in the south aisle are stained: the pulpit and fittings are of oak: the church was restored in 1847, and has sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1681, but is mutilated. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £75, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Charles Percy Graham-Montgomery M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. The parochial charities are £27 16s. yearly. A fair is held May 1st. Here is a corn mill. The George inn, said to be the oldest village inn in England, is a fine example of the domestic architecture of the 15th century, and is historically famous from the fact that James, Duke of Monmouth, slept here on the 26th June, 1685, shortly before the disastrous encounter at Sedgmoor, on the 6th July following. The Manor House retains a dovecote said to be Elizabethan. The principal landowners are Meredith Meredith-Brown esq. of Hullavington House, Wilts, the trustees of the late G. Baker esq. Edward Talbot Day Foxcroft esq. of Hinton House, Charterhouse Hinton, the trustees of the late Henry Pike esq. and Thomas Pointing esq. The soil is loamy and clay; the subsoil is stone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans, and about one half pasture. The area is 1,547 acres; rateable value, £2,503; the population in 1901 was 455.
Endowed (mixed), erected in 1,827, for 110 children; average attendance, 59; & endowed by the late Joseph Neeld esq. with £50 a year, & there is also an endowment of £10 yearly from Cole’s charity.
Infant, erected in 1841, for 60 children; average attendance, 32.
