Historical Description

The village of Nunny: which Dr. Maton notices as remarkable for the ruins of a strong castle, "the shell of which remains nearly perfect, and is a very fine piece of antiquity. The ground plan of this castle is a double square, with a round tower at each corner. It measures sixty-four feet in length, and twenty-seven in breadth, and the walls, which appear to be at least sixty feet high, are on the sides eight feet and a half in thickness, and in the towers about seven. There were four stories, the lowermost of which seems to have contained the kitchen and offices, and was distinguished from the others on the outside, by having square instead of arched windows. The huge fire-place recalls to our memory the substantial dishes of the ancient barons, and we may guess, from its size, that it has served to roast many an ox entire. Just within the door, on the right hand, some traces of steps appear, leading to the second story, in which probably was the grand hall, besides other rooms; the state apartments being still higher. The walls of the towers are pierced with loop-holes; those between have handsome Gothic windows. At the upper part of this magnificent pile, the towers are contracted in diameter, and seem to have communicated with the parapet that goes round the outside, about fifteen feet below the top. The shrubs, the festoons of ivy, and the large fragments of stone hanging from the shattered battlements, impart the most picturesque effect to this bold relic of desolated grandeur."

Nunny is a large parish, three miles west of Frome, and fifteen south from Bath, in a dry healthy spot, partly hilly, and partly plain. The parish abounds in oak timber, and there are some curious mosses on the shaggy slopes of the hills.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

NUNNEY is a parish and village, on a small stream that joins the river Frome, 3 ½ miles west-south-west from Frome station on the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, in the Frome division of the county, Frome hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Frome, and archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. In 1889 a supply of water was brought to the village from reservoirs situated at Gaer Hill, and under the control of the Frome Urban Council. The village was thoroughly drained in 1874. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, transepts and an octagonal embattled western tower, with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the north transept, formerly the burial place of the lords of the manor, contains several altar-tombs with recumbent figures to members of the De la Mere family, one of which represents Sir John de la Mere the founder of the castle; on another tomb are effigies of a knight in armour and a lady; the third tomb has similar effigies: there is a chancel screen of oak and four stained windows: the chancel was rebuilt in 1874, and the interior thoroughly restored and reseated with open benches, affording sittings for 463 persons: the church was heated throughout with hot water in 1896. The register dates from the year 1548. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £350, with residence and 58 acres of glebe, in the gift of T. Northam esq. and held since 1898 by the Rev. Wm. Powell-Davies B.A., L.Th, of Durham University. Here are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. There are charities amounting to about £488 yearly value, arising from moneys in the Funds, and of which £72 is distributed in cash and the remainder applied to the general uses of the poor. This statement includes the bequests following:-Thomas Harris, of Bristol, who died in 1797, left £1,000, the interest of which, now amounting to £31 10s. is given yearly to women, natives of and married in this parish; Thomas Turner, a native of this parish, who died the 21st of May, 1839, by will left £14,467, the interest of which, now about £440 yearly, is applied “to the instruction of youth, the alleviation of suffering and infirmity, and the solace of old age.” In April, 1873, a mine of iron ore was opened here and worked by the Furzeham Iron Ore Company; this has since been closed. The remains of a Roman tesselated pavement, in good preservation, were discovered some years ago on the property of J. H. Shore esq. of Whatley House: there are also the remains of a Roman encampment near the village. Here are the ruins of Nunney Castle, for many years the seat of the De la Mere family: in the time of Richard II. the castle passed into the family of Paulet, afterwards Dukes of Bolton: in the time of Queen Elizabeth it belonged to Sir William Paulet K.G. the first Marquess of Winchester, by whom the estate was disposed of, and, after passing through several other families, is now the property of R. Baily-Neale esq.; the walls, now overgrown with ivy, are of great strength, the side walls being 7 feet 6 inches in thickness, and those of the tower 7 feet, and within these are passages and staircases; a moat, 22 feet wide and 10 feet deep, which communicated with a stream flowing near, surrounded the whole building: during the Civil War, being then held by the Prater family, it was garrisoned for the King, and after a determined resistance to the attacks of the Parliamentary forces, at length surrendered, on condition that the garrison, should be allowed to go to their own homes; the buildings were then dismantled and are now fast going to decay: during the year 1889 the ruins were inclosed, and a smalt charge is now made for their inspection: the key may be had from Mr. W. Beck. R. Baily-Neale esq. who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Cork and Orrery K.P., P.C. they Duke of Somerset, Hugh Lush esq. of Frome, and John. Henry Shore esq. of Whatley House, are the chief landowners. The soil which is not of great depth, is various; the subsoil is clay and limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture for dairy purposes. The acreage is 2,431; rateable value, £4,496; the population in 1901 was 840.

A School Board of 5 members was formed August 21, 1874; Thomas John Russell, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Nunney Board School (boys, girls & infants), erected with master’s residence, in 1896, at a cost of £1,800, for 80 boys, 80 girls & 60 infants; average attendance, 54, boys, 54 girls & 51 infants; 7 boys are clothed, & receive is 6d. per week for maintenance out of Turner’s Charity & also £15 each for apprenticing them, with, free permission to choose their own trades & masters.
