Historical Description

In the neighbourhood of Watchet is a village, called Old Cleve, the inhabitants of which gather great quantities of sea liverwort, which is found on the rocks at low water; and being cleaned and pickled, is sent to different parts of the kingdom, as an excellent remedy for the scurvy.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

OLD CLEEVE is a village and parish, on the western slope of a hill and bounded on the north by the Bristol Channel, with stations at Washford on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and on the West Somerset Minerals railway (this line is now closed, 1899), and is 3 miles west from Williton, 3 south-east from Watchet, 3 ½ east-south-east from Dunster, and 19 northwest from Taunton, in the Western division of the county, hundred, union, county court district and petty sessional division of Williton, rural deanery of Wiveliscombe, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The parish is remarkable for its rocks, which are beautifully veined with alabaster. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the Middle-Pointed or Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells; the chancel retains a hagioscope; the east window is stained, and the west window is a memorial to William Leonard Halliday, his wife and daughter, and to Edward Vibart and his wife and four children, all of whom died in the massacre at Cawnpore, 28 June, 1857; there are sittings for 275 persons; in the churchyard are the base, steps and shaft of an ancient cross; a new lych gate was erected in 1892. The registers date from the year 1661. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £405, with residence and small glebe, in the gift of and held since 1873 by the Rev. William Walton Herringham M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, prebendary of Wells and rural dean of Wiveliscombe. Here formerly existed Our Lady’s Chapel of Cleeve, a place of pilgrimage for devotees. A small benefaction, known as “the second poor Sydenham charity,” belongs to this parish, and is of about £18 annual value. Chapel Cleeve, the residence of Francis Sterry esq. is pleasantly seated about half a mile from the church, and commands a most beautiful view of the surrounding neighbourhood. George Fownes Luttrell esq. D.L., J.P. of Dunster Castle, who is lord of the manor, Sir Walter John Trevelyan bart. of Nettlecombe Court and William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Salisbury, are the principal landowners. The soil is a rich loam with some clay; subsoil, marl; and produces excellent crops of wheat, beans, barley, mangolds, potatoes and turnips. The area is 5,199 acres of land and 4 of water, and 333 of foreshore. The rateable value of the whole parish is £8,162; this includes the ecclesiastical parish of Ledghland; the population in 1891 was 1,447 in the civil and 1,083 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 14,606, which came into operation March 24, 1884, a detached part of Monksilver parish known as Doniford, and by Order 19,060, March 25, 1886, Timwood, from St. Decumans, and Washford, also from St. Decumans, were amalgamated with Old Cleeve, for civil purposes.

National, Washford, for 224 children; average attendance, 150.
