Historical Description

OTHERY is a parish and village, on the river Parret and on the high road to Taunton, 5 miles north-west from Langport station, 3 miles from Athelny station on the Durston and Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway and 7 south-east from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, Whitley hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael is a cruciform building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, with details of the 14th and 15th centuries, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch, a central embattled tower 75 feet high, with pinnacles and angle buttresses, and containing 5 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Samuel Simmons esq. of Newlands, Gloucestershire, and his wife, and was erected by their daughter, Mrs. Shipton: there is a mural monument of marble to the Rev. John Noble Shipton D.D. a former vicar, who gave the carved oak screen, and died Feb. 25th, 1864, and another mural monument to the Rev. Henry Roberts B.A. late vicar, who died Oct. 1st, 1870: there are some finely-carved bench ends, and at the vicarage is preserved an embroidered cope of the 15th century: the church affords sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £263, including residence and 19 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Charles Melchior de Polignac Gillam M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. Here is a Congregational chapel. Mrs. Harley, who died in 1891, left £300, the interest of which is spent in coal. Mr. James Baker, who is lord of the manor, and Messrs. James Winslade, H. Chambers and Joseph Somers are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy and sandy; the subsoil is turf, clay and sandstone. The land is chiefly in pasture, but wheat, beans, roots, barley and potatoes are grown. The area is 1,842 acres; assessable value, £2,376; the population in 1891 was 575; ecclesiastical, 523.

By Local Government Board Order 18,101, March 25, 1886, a detached part of Lyng was added to Othery for civil purposes.

A School Board of 5 members was formed March 20, 1877; Mr. James Baker C.C. chairman; P. O. H. & T. M. Reed, Bridgwater, clerks to the board.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1880, for 120 children; average attendance, 70.
