Historical Description

OVER STOWEY is a parish and village near the Quantock hills, 9 miles west from Bridgwater station on the main line of the Great Western railway, 9 from Bridgwater terminal station of a branch from Edgington of the Somerset and Dorset railway, in the Western division of the county, western division of Cannington hundred, Bridgwater petty sessional division, Bridgwater union and county court district, rural deanery of Quantoxhead, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: there are several stained windows and in the north aisle is a memorial window to Henry (Labouchere), 1st and only Baron Taunton, who died in 1869; the chancel window is a memorial window to the Rev. William Beadon Buller B.A. vicar from 1820: there is an ancient stone font. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £140, with residence and 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Lord Taunton, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Gordon Cuming M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. A cemetery a quarter of an acre in extent, the gift of Mr. and the Hon. Mrs. Stanley, was opened in June, 1882, and has a lych gate presented by the Rev. Edward Leighton Elwes M.A. vicar here 1874—87, and a memorial cross to Lord Taunton: the cemetery is under the control of the Parish Council. Reading and news rooms with a library of 150 volumes were opened in October, 1896. There are charities of £15 1s. 11d. yearly value. Sandstone and limestone are found here. Quantock Lodge, the seat of Edward James Stanley esq. M.P., M.A., D.L., J.P. and the Hon. Mrs. Stanley, daughter of the late Lord Taunton, is a handsome mansion of stone in the Elizabethan style, erected by the late Lord Taunton from stone raised on the estate, and is situated on an eminence in well-wooded grounds, affording delightful views over the Quantock and Mendip hills and the surrounding country, E. J. Stanley esq. M.P. and the Hon. Mrs. Stanley, who is lady of the manor, are the chief landowners. Sir A. Fuller-Acland-Hood bart. M.P. is also a landowner. The soil is red clay, and the subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The acreage is 3,644; rateable value, £2,435; the population in 1891 was 432 civil, 433 ecclesiastical.

By Local Government Board Order, 18,100, March 25, 1885, a detached part of Over Stowey, known as Stowey Rocks, was transferred to Nether Stowey for civil purposes.
