Historical Description
PAULTON is a populous parish and healthy village between the high roads from Bristol and Bath to Wells, 1 ¼ miles south-east from Hallatrow station on the Bristol and North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway and 2 north-west from Midsomer Norton station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 10 south-west from Bath, 12 south-by-east from Bristol, 12 north-west from Frome and 119 from London, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Chewton, union of Clutton, petty sessional division and county court district of Temple Cloud, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of the Holy Trinity, rebuilt (with the exception of the tower) in 1839, is an edifice of Bath stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, organ chamber, vestry, north porch and a western tower, with handsome parapet and four pinnacles, and containing a good clock, erected in 1874 at the cost of the late Miss Julia Hill, and 6 bells, five of which were cast by Bilbie in 1742, recast in 1872 and a 6th added by the parishioners in 1897 to commemorate the 60th year of the reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: all the windows are stained, most of them being memorials erected by or to members of the Hill family: there are sittings for 600 persons. The register, which has been badly kept, dates from 1702. The living, formerly held in conjunction with that of Chewton Mendip, is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, including 54 acres of glebe, with residence, in the alternate gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells and the vicar of Chewton Mendip, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Thomas Williamson Bull Th. Assoc., K.C.L. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Baptist chapels. A Cemetery, 2 acres in extent, was provided in 1880, and a portion of the ground consecrated by the Bishop of Bath and Wells in October, 1882: there is an entrance lodge with Board room attached, but no mortuary chapels: it is under the control of the Parish Council. A considerable trade is carried on in this village, there being an iron foundry belonging to Mr. Alfred Evans, shoe factories, a colliery, some good shops and two inns. The Cottage Hospital, which occupies a salubrious position at the south end of the village, on a site presented by Lieut.-Col. H. M. Carter, lord of the manor, was originally opened in 1872, but the present structure dates only from 1886, and is a memorial to the late Lieut.-Col. Mogg, of Farrington Gurney: it is a substantial building in the Queen Anne style, and consists of a men’s ward, containing seven beds, a women’s ward with three beds, and a ward, for special cases, containing one bed, besides operating and convalescent rooms and kitchen: it is open for the reception of accidents and surgical cases, and fevers of a non-infectious character, and is managed by a committee and supported by voluntary contributions. Lieut.-Col. Harry Molyneux Carter is lord of the manor and chief landowner. John Henry Shore esq. J.P. of Whatley, near Frome, William Rees-Mogg esq. of Cholwell House, and Alfred Evans esq. are also landowners. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil clay and limestone rock. The chief crops are hay and corn, and the land is very productive. The area of the parish is 1,055 acres; rateable value, £6,958; the population in 1901 was 2,351 civil, 2,351 ecclesiastical.
By Local Government Board Order 15,678, March 24, 1884, Pons Ash was transferred to Midsomer Norton from Paulton, and by Order 15,681, a detached part of Paulton was added to Chewton Mendip in Wells union, for civil purposes.
