Historical Description

PAWLETT is a village and parish on the east bank of the river Parrett, 1 ½ miles north-west from Dunball station on the main line of the Great Western railway and 4 north from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of North Petherton, petty sesional division, union and county court district of Bridgwater, rural deanery of Pawlett, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient cruciform building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: the south porch is Norman; the roof and tower were restored in 1900 at a cost of about £200: there are sittings for 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1667. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £217, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Frederick La Cloche Snell M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Fairs are held here on the last Monday in August and October. Lord de Mauley, who is lord of the manor, Lord Clifford of Chudleigh and Henry Smith Spark esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is a heavy loam; subsoil, various. The crops are beans, wheat and clover, and the pasture land known by the name of “Pawlett Hams, ’’ comprising about 2,000 arces, and let annually by public auction, is the richest in England. The area is 3,014 acres of land, 4 of water, 85 of tidal water and 313 foreshore; rateable value, £7,788; the population in 1891 was 483.

A School Board of 5 members was formed December 6, 1887; Richard Draper, clerk to the board.
