Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
Pensford, a small obscure town, situated about four miles from Keynsham. It lies in a valley on the banks of the river Thew, but contains no building worth particular description. It has a weekly market on Tuesday.
PENSFORD (or St. Thomas-in-Pensford) is a village situated in a valley, and was united in 1898 to the parish of Publow; it is on the road from Bristol to Wells, with a station on the North Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and is 6 miles south from Bristol and 125 ¼ from London. The river Chew runs through the village, and divides it from the parish of Publow. Here is a viaduct of 16 arches on the North Somerset railway, 100 feet high, and spanning a valley of considerable depth. The church of St. Thomas a Becket, entirely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1868, is an edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of quasi chancel, nave, north and south porches and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 2 bells: the original edifice was probably of the 14th century: the building has no chancel arch but a screen of stone and ironwork divides the nave from the part used as a chancel: the carved oak pulpit bears the date 1617: there are tablets to the Guy, Veale and Thompson families, and a curious old stone font: the church has sittings for 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1651. The living is a chapelry, annexed to the vicarage of Publow, and has an attached lectureship founded by the Ireland family, of the value of about £25 2s. 8d. yearly. There are Wesleyan Methodist and Independent chapels. In a barton here are the remains of an old village or market cross, built into the wall of a house. Fairs were formerly held on the 6th of May and 8th of November in each year, but are now extinct. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late John Windmill Lansdowne Daubeny esq. and the trustees of the “Church Lands Charity.’' The soil is rich; subsoil, Ted sandstone and limestone. The chief crops are principally pasture.
A School Board of 5 members was formed February 16, 1887, for the united parishes of Stanton Drew & Pensford.
