Historical Description
PILTON is a parish, on the road from Shepton Mallet to Glastonbury, 1 ½ miles north-west from West Pennard station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 3 south-west from Shepton Mallet and 6 south-east from Wells, in the Eastern division of the county, in the hundred of Whitestone, county court district of Wells, petty sessional division and union of Shepton Mallet, rural deanery of Shepton Mallet, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is a large and handsome edifice of carboniferous limestone, in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, dating from 1726 to 1785: the chancel and aisle are of the period of Edward III.: the nave probably dates from about 1180, and a Norman arch in good preservation still exists on the south side: the star-shaped east window is stained, and there are memorial windows to Elizabeth Frances, wife of Robert Clark esq. of Westholme House; to Thomas Overall, a precentor of Wells from 1471 to 1493; Thomas Hole; and one placed in 1897 in the south porch in memory of Lieut.-Col. J. H. Balmain, of Pilton House: on the south side of the sacrarium is a piscina under a highly ornamented arch, and in the centre of the nave hangs a brass chandelier dated 1749: the nave has a fine open timber roof, and there are monuments and ancient brasses and tablets to the Strode and Bethell families, and a handsome mural monument to the Clerk family: the remains of an ancient embroidered cope of the 16th century, for some time used as a cover for the communion table, are now preserved at the church: the communion plate dates from 1570, but the paten is supposed to be of still earlier date, probably about 1500: the church was partly restored in 1862 and again in 1879, at a cost of £3,000, raised by subscription: in 1888 a new organ was erected in the chancel at a cost of £400: there are sittings for 350 persons. In the churchyard is a large yew tree, supposed to be 800 years old. The register dates from 1558, and a book has been found containing the churchwardens’ accounts from 1508 to 1530. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £239, including 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Charles William Bennett. There are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels. The fair, formerly held on the first Monday after the 10th of Sept. is now obsolete. The Working Men’s Club and Reading Rooms were erected in 1892 by the late E. H. Clerk esq. J.P. in memory of his wife, on the site of an ancient hostelry belonging to the Abbots of Glastonbury, of which externally it is an exact reproduction: the building comprises reading and smoking rooms for the use of members, and a large room for public purposes, together with a caretaker’s residence. The rents of the “Church Lands,” now (1901) amounting to about £15 annually, are applied by the churchwardens to purposes connected with the church. Bethell’s charity, founded in 1863, Cook’s in 1865, and Hole’s in 1845, and consisting together of £355 15s. 8d. invested in Stocks, provide £1 9s. annually for education and about £9 for distribution in money. Dunkerton’s charity, founded in 1867, and consisting of about £107 Stock, produces about £3 a year, for distribution in kind: the original bequests were as follows:-Job Cook left the interest of £50 for the keeping of his grave in repair and the residue to the Church Sunday school; Miss Philly Hole, the interest of £100 to ten poor unmarried men or women; James Bethell esq. the interest of £100 to ten poor men or women; and Mrs. Martha Bethell the interest of £100 to ten old men and ten old women; Dunkerton’s charity of £100, the interest for distribution; Mr. C. Moody also left by will £100, the interest to be distributed at Christmas among ten poor churchmen and women; and Mrs. Charles Orledge left in 1901 a sum of £100, the interest to be used in the maintenance of the Sunday School. Near the church is an ancient bam, formerly belonging to the Abbots of Glastonbury, in good preservation, and it has a well-designed open timbered roof, and on the four sides are the emblems of the Evangelists. Westholme, the family seat of Lieut.-Col. Robert Mildmay Clerk, of Charlton House, but now occupied by Mrs. Douglas Campbell, is a good mansion, beautifully seated one mile from the high road leading from Shepton Mallet to Glastonbury. Burford, the seat of Miss E. D. Clerk, is a mansion in the Elizabethan style, erected in 1853: Perridge House, the property and seat of Hugh Vemer Dobson esq. M.A., J.P. is a fine and ancient residence, overlooking the vale of Avalon. Earl Temple is lord of the manor and owns a portion of the land. The chief landowners are Major William Dugald Stuart, of 36 Hill street, London W; J. F. Hole Bethell esq. Miss E. D. Clerk, Lieut.-Col. Robert Mildmay Clerk, of Shepton Mallet, Hugh Verner Dobson esq. M.A., J.P. and William Luff esq. and Mrs. Mathias.
