Historical Description

PITMINSTER is a large parish and village, 4 ½ miles south from Taunton station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the main line of the Great Western railway, in the We&tern division of the county, Taunton hundred, petty sessional division and union, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Andrew and St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower, with spire, containing 5 bells: there are some ancient and richly carved benches, a finely carved stone pulpit and reredos and some very interesting altar-tombs to the Coles family, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries: five of the windows are stained: there are sittings for 380 persons. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1544; marriages and burials, 1542. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £320, with glebe (£2 5s.) and residence, in the gift of the Rev. Alfred Marwood-Elton B.A. of Widworthy Court, and held since 1900 by the Rev. William Richard Hartwright L.Th, of Hatfield Hall, Durham, who is also rector of Angersleigh. The rectorial tithes belong to F. M. Newton esq. and are of £210 yearly value. There is a Mission room at Blagdon, with 200 sittings. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1732, with sittings for about 150 persons, and a chapel for the Brethren. The charities are of £40 yearly value; there are also 5 acres of land on Blagdon Hill, let as allotments. The reservoirs of the Taunton Corporation Waterworks are in this parish. Barton Grange, the property of Francis Murray Newton esq. J.P. and now (1901) the residence of Owen T. Price esq. occupies a commanding site at the foot of the Blagdon Hills, and was anciently the summer residence of the Priors of Taunton; the park contains some magnificent elm and oak timber. Eastbrook House is the residence of Major A. C. Greaves-Banning; Canons Grove, of Lieut.-Col. John M. E. Waddy; Lowton House, of Ernest Arthur Mattock esq.; Poundisford Park, of Capt. William Henry Nicol; Culmhead, of the Rt. Hon. John William Mellor P.C., M.P., K.C., M.A., D.L., J.P.; Poundisford Lodge is now (1901) unoccupied; and Pitminster Lodge, of Henry Jeffries Badcock esq. J.P. Edwin Irwin Bambridge Cox esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are F. M. Newton esq. the Rt. Hon. John William Mellor P.C., M.P., K.C. E. A. Mattock esq. the trustees of the Rev. Beauchamp Kerr Warren Kerr Pearse M.A. (d. 1900), the Countess of Wilton, Mrs. Elizabeth Batt, H. A. Kinglake esq. the trustees of the late Col. Charles W. H. Helyar (d. 1900), and the trustees of Mrs. Reynolds. The soil is clay; subsoil, various clay, and in the upper parts rock. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans, roots and pasture land. The area is 5,120 acres; rateable value, £11,557; the population in 1891 was 1,262.
